I need to find out what the 1972 Harley is worth?

My only brother passed away just over a year ago. He loved his Harley and I have it in storage and I can't get insurance on it through our auto because of it being custom made. It is a wide glide shovel head on a 72 sporster frame. I think it is over or around 1100CC. It looks just like the one Dennis Hooper rode in easy rider. He had added lots of chrome and it is very painful for me to look at this bike I can't part with it and I do want to get insurance on it. I might could post some pictures if allowed.
My brother new his bikes and was a jet mechanic so it would be what he said. He dropped dead suddenly so I can only go on what he would talk about so often. He had lots of other easy rider things.
I think the tanks are fat boys and it is a jump start. I am over 50 and 5 ft everyone says it is way to big for me to learn to ride.
I need help in getting some idea what it is worth and finding insurance.
Thank you,
Sandy

Thanks.

I can't reach the pedals and someone pointed out it could kick back and send me through the air. I found out he was thrown over the handle bars a couple of times.
He was a experienced biker so I would just hope to find someone to ride me on it occasionally after I can get some insurance and idea on its value.

Take the bike to a Harley dealership to get it appraised. Talk to whoever has worked there the longest and has the most Harley tattoos (evidence of his love and knowledge). After you get some numbers, chat him up and ask for recommendations on how to get the bike insured.

From what I know of insurance companies, you'll want to find one that caters to bikers. Progressive is excellent. Farmers and State-Farm are NOT. Most likely options are that they will value the bike and write the policy based on the frame, and that would be the easiest way to get it insured and out on the streets, that wouldn't however give you a full value based upon the additional parts and different motor you've got on it. If they take the add-ons and motor into consideration and treat the bike as a 'custom' they could insure it based upon rates from factory-built custom bikes such as Ironhorse and BigDog, in which case you are going to pay an arm and a leg for the insurance coverage, and I don't even think it'd be worth it.

I can't see your bike or the condition that it is in but if I had to wager a guess I would say the bike is worth around 13K. Insure it as a sportster and get it on the road.

Good luck.

the bigger the bike the easier to ride
they roll better handle better look better

When a bike is custom it's hard to say it's value without seeing it.
A 72 Sportster in good shape is worth around $3500.00 , but a nice custom job could be worth 2-3 times that.
Be aware ,to get insurance on a custom bike ( valued over book) can be cost prohibitive.
Consider insuring it as a 72 Sporty so you have some coverage and take your chances on total loss.

progressive will insure a bike with a special construction title. my panhead is a cuctom and I had the same problem but they insured me. the catch is you can only get basic liability insurance. If your bike is a shovel head it is at least 74 cubic inches. it should be easy for you to ride due to the low senter of gravity provided by a ridgid frame.where are you located? I would be happy to teach you how to ride it. and you can convert it to electric start.

why don't you get the vin number from the steering neck or the title and take that to a dealer. in fact insurance companies can tell you what it is from the vin. the best prices on bike ins, check out www.motorcycleservices.com
