Buying bike of ebay-is it legal for me to drive it home if i have my licence?what do i do about insurance? |
How can i legaly drive my newly purchases bike home? do i need insurance legaly before i buy it? also how do you get the title legaly transferd, do i give him the money and we both go to court house? or do we jsut have to sign the back of the title.? The best thing to do would be get the VIN from the seller. After that, call a LOCAL independent insurance agent and ask them if they insure motorcycles, and then make arrangements to get the insurance on the bike BEFORE you put it on the street. id jst sigh the back of the title and you should be fine you have uoto 10 days to get insurence on a newly purchased bike if you get pulled over just tell them u just bought i thats what i would do! these are questions that differ in each state. you need to contact the tag office in your state and tell them what you want to do and ask how to do it. as for insurance, if you have insurance now any vehicle you purchase will automatically be covered for 30 days, BUT only if your insurance company covers bikes. for example, my insurance company (state farm does not cover bikes-so it would not be covered) I would suggest you contact insurance companies (or your own) and ask them what to do. Yes get the title signed and get a temp plate and insurance!Depending on state you may need inspection, emission, before the title is issued in your name....if bike has tags maybe owner will let you mail or drop off tags...you did not say if this is local or in state.......But you should have insurance and a good tag. First of all see a title--some people will try to sell with just a bill of sale, which is legal so far as selling, but to register you need the title signed by the previous owner. If it is out of state, most states (CA) will sell you a temporary permit for a small sum so you will be covered. If in state just take the title to the DMV and get registered before driving. Before you go to pick it up, give your insurance agent the VIN of the bike and get it insured. You buy the insurance and get the tags for it BEFORE you go down to pick it up. He'll have to send you the title. You MIGHT want to use an escrow agent - you send them the money, he sends them the title, they send him the money and you the title. He'll have to have the title signed over to you already. ITS BEST IF YOU CONTACT YOUR LOCAL (DMV) DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES OFFICE, THEY WILL BE ABLE TO ANSWER ANY AND ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS AND AT THE SAME TIME YOU WILL BE GETTING THE CORRECT ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION. |
