Moped Insurance for my 16yr old son?

I am looking for moped insurance for my son. I am going to be paying for it and i would like to do it monthly.

Does anyone know of some cheap insurers? And also should i insure it in my name or his name?

Ive tried a few and because ive been putting in my sons name they wont alllow me to pay monthly as he is under the age of eighteen. Also if i put in my name, i havn't taken a bike test. Do i need to take a bike test to insure a moped in my name?

Im sooooooo confused!!!!!!

Please help!

Typically, insurance rates are filed by the various insurance companies that are licensed to do business in your State, and they vary from State to State.

The best thing to do is call a LOCAL independent agent. Just look in the phone book for the PIA or Big I (Trusted Choice) logos and you will find a professional licensed agent that will be able to help you solve your insurance problems.

An independent insurance agent will normally have a dozen different companies and if he cannot help you, he should be networked with other local agents that can. Be sure to ask them if they write motorcycle insurance.

A lot of folks say "PROGRESSIVE" and as an agent, I use them but, they are NOT always the best. Each rider is judged by his/her own merits - experience (riding a motorcycle ON THE STREET, type of bike, age, driving record, credit score - so, you might look for American Modern Home, Pacific Specialty, Foremost, Dairyland, Victoria (just to name a few.)

As far as liability only, we write it for as low as $46.00 per YEAR!! So, be sure to look around!

Since your son is ONLY 16, he cannot sign a contract and an insurance policy IS a contract between you and the insurance company. He will have to be 18 before he can sign on his own.

You might also REQUIRE him to take a Motorcycle Safety Course - just ask around at your local motorcycle shops and they can tell you how to contact a local instructor.

And just a rule of thumb: The closer you come to riding straight up and down, the lower the rates will be. The obverse of this is ALSO true...the more you have to lean forward becoming closer to the horizontal to ride the bike, the HIGHER the rates will be.

Good luck, ride RESPONSIBLY and I hope this helps!

Actually depending on the state you live in you may not have to get insurance. I would check that first. I only know about that law in Montana though because I live here. Check your local insurance company first though.

Once again I disagree with the previous post about using only a local agent. Call Progressive- they are the #1 insurer of motorcycles. They can do a quote with you on the policy depending on your state even if you don't have a motorcycle license. Always call around and get several quotes.
