In retrospect, wouldn't "2007" been a better title for George Orwells book "1984"? |
As someone who was around in 1984, we all just joked about the things that were predicted and never really happened. Although government was certainly getting more intrusive, you really couldn't say it had reached big brother proportions. Now I look around and see everything government is trying to do to control our lives. Want to ride a motorcycle. Have to wear a helmet. Same with a bicycle. Drive a car? Better put that seatbelt on and have insurance. Want to smoke? Go stand in the rain. And soon you better not be caught smoking at home or in your car. They're now telling us what we can eat. And they want to tell us how we can discipline our children. I could go on and on, but you get the point. And if you think it's bad now, wait till they get hold of our health insurance. Under the rationale of "since we pay for any illness or accident you may have, we have a right to regulate the things you can do or what you eat". The most amazing thing to me is, people just take it. WAKE UP!! I think "The Bush family History" would have been more accurate Freedom is dying the death of a thousand liberal cuts. pathetic i must admit. I see it. Socialism is on the rise. It's such a gradual change that people just ignore it. I guess we're still okay for right now. I'm awake I'm awake. Now, time to go figure out how to fight ideas. I don't want to pay for your accident, especially if you crash into me and don't have insurance (which has happened to me, by the way, all the other driver's fault and I'm permanently injured and thousands of dollars in the hole because she didn't have enough insurance to pay for my injuries). I don't want to suffer the consequences if you smoke up my oxygen and give me cancer from your second hand smoke, or even just make my hair stink. Most of the things you suggest infringe on other peoples' right to lead a healthy lifestyle, and the government SHOULD regulate those things. As far as somoking in your home or car or not wearing your seatbelt or helmet, well, that should be your problem and not hurt me any, but the problem with that is that if you get sick or hurt because of your own stupidity, my health care costs go up. If the system were such that you and only you would pay for your actions, that would be one thing, but alas, it is not set up that way, so I'm all for the government telling you what to do. Big brother is not in your home, watching you and forcing you to get up every morning and exercise. He is not telling you what words to use or forcing you to endure shortages from made-up wars. He is not telling you who to have relationships with. I equate it to a fog in a pot... the frog sits in the pot and the heat is turned up little by little till the fog is... "well you get the picture" people don't see it coming till it hits them in the face then they cry till there clown makeup runs by then it's to late... some of us recognize that the light at the end of the tunnel is actually the train coming... |
