Do I have to pay this much to ride a motorcycle?

I am getting a motorcycle soon... Very soon. And I fear that I may not be able to pay the insurance! I am 18 and I have never been in any kind of accident while driving and never even got a ticket. When I looked for a quote it said something like 2k$ a year! That will be more than what I am paying on my motorcycle. Can I get my bike added to my dad's motorcycle insurance (He has a V-rod) and get it cheaper? I am getting a Yamaha yzf-r6. I live in Georgia.

Shop around!!

FYI, I think the insurance stats show that over 90% of all motorcycle accidents happen to males aged 16-25. So, the price of insurance for guys in that age group is significantly higher than for anyone else. The next highest is males aged 40-55. Something like that.

For biker chicks of any age, insurance is CHEAP, because we are statistically in the lowest accident group. Thanks, guys!!! Vroom vrooooommmm.
Damn... I only pay $400.00 per year and I have a GSXR-750. But I am 29 and a female. Have you taken the MSF class that will save ya 10% off. I would try going through Dad if he will let ya, but I am sure that it will raise his a little too.
Insurance for motorcycles is by the cc's of the bike not the value. So don't get a 1500 or anything. Also, my bike insurance is like $8 a month for a Suzuki GSX-R 600 and that's State Farm. Here in IL thats the best insurance company around. I checked with Geico and Progressive and they were both unrealistically high - like $100 a month. HA! I wouldn't give them any of my money!! My MVR is excellent though and I'm married and 23 y/o so that keeps it low.
Sorry to say, but 18 years old and yzf-r6, be ready to pay up the nose. As far as using your dad's insurance, if you get a crash, ticket, or anything and the insurance company finds out, your dad can end being cancelled. When the insurance company cancels his insurance, he will be paying rates like yours.
You are in a tough spot given your age and the fact that you need comprehensive since you are still paying off the bike. Keep shopping it around, try Geico if you haven't and talk to your father's isurance agent. If he has had a clean record they may be able to do better for you.
AAhhhhh! Welcome to the unjust world of insurance rates against the young. Ask your dad about the unfairness about to be unleashed on you.

Only thing you can do to improve your rate quotes, is to grow older and stay clean.

Insurance companies use complex charts and data of all people and ages. Data has proved that young people are more likely to be involved in accidents. Just because you haven't had one yet does not mean you never will. As you age and prove that you are a better risk(over 25) your rates will go down.

Yes, you are gonna hafta pay if you wanna ride.
try getting a smaller, slower, or older bike....or one that you don't need comprehensive&collision on; that's probably most of the premium
