Why do cyclists think that they have more rights to the roads than motor vehicles? |
The other week a guy on a bike decided to flip a U-turn across a 4-lane highway and ended up getting hit by a family (father, mother, 12-day-old baby), and the family swerved to try and miss him and went head-on into a dump truck. The biker, mother, and baby were killed, all because of the cyclist's, "I own the road and EVERYONE will yeild to me!" attitude. The biker also did not have to carry insurance, so the father, (sole survivor), gets NOTHING in financial compensation. This is wrong. I thought roads were first and foremost a means of transportation for motor vehicles. They are the majority of the commuters and therefore they should have the right-of-way no matter what. I also HATE how bikers ride on or over the lines, forcing motorists so swerve around them. When someone on a bike dies, I have no remorse for them. Darwin's theory of the less intelligent being weeded out at work. But to take a family to their deaths because of your own ignorance is quite another thing. That is a tragedy. You should post information so that people can donate money to the father so he can bury his family. This is so horrible I feel a little sick. There should be more enforcement for right of way laws reguarding people on bicycles. You're right, they don't belong on the same roads as motor vehicles. I live in Florida and bicyclists have just as many if not more rights to public roadways as as they follow the rules. Look, you got jerks in every crowd. Stuff happens. But - as to why us bikers think everyone else ought to yield to us? Hey, we gots bigger guns, yo! Okay, now you can knock off the insulting generalizations and we'll support your efforts to mandate everyone abiding by the rules of the road, whether operating a two-wheeler, four-wheeler or 18-wheeler (and everything between). Pedestrians own the road over bikes and cars. You learned that but seem to have forgotten. It is in your training manual. Read it. WE car owners get a privilege (not a right) to operate a motor vehicle on the road PROVIDED we follow the rules of conduct that is given to us. And that is that. It is sad that the accident occured and also sad that innocent people died. The person was at fault not his bike... It is certain people who are ignorant not everyone who rides a bike or motorcycle. I've seen MANY ignorant people in cars and trucks as well. You seem to stereotype everyone depending on what the ride/drive... So tell me... I'm a mother of 3 with a motorcycle... what would you consider me? For all who know, and don't know, Motorcycle Riders I saw you, hug your purse closer to you in the grocery store line. But, you didn't see me, put an extra $10.00 in the collection plate last Sunday. I saw you, pull your child closer when we passed each other on the sidewalk. But, you didn't see me, playing Santa at the local mall. I saw you, change your mind about going into the restaurant. But, you didn't see me, attending a meeting to raise more money for the hurricane relief. I saw you, roll up your window and shake your head when I drove by. But, you didn't see me, driving behind you when you flicked your cigarette butt out the car window. I saw you, frown at me when I smiled at your children. But, you didn't see me, when I took time off from work to run toys to the homeless. I saw you, stare at my long hair. But, you didn't see me, and my friends cut ten inches off for Locks of Love. I saw you, roll your eyes at our leather coats and gloves. But, you didn't see me, and my brothers donate our old coats and gloves to those that had none. I saw you, look in fright at my tattoos. But, you didn't see me, cry as my children where born and have their name written over and in my heart. I saw you, change lanes while rushing off to go somewhere. But, you didn't see me, going home to be with my family. I saw you, complain about how loud and noisy our bikes can be. But, you didn't see me, when you were changing the CD and drifted into my lane. I saw you, yelling at your kids in the car. But, you didn't see me, pat my child's hands, knowing he was safe behind me. I saw you, reading the newspaper or map as you drove down the road. But, you didn't see me, squeeze my wife's leg when she told me to take the next turn. I saw you, race down the road in the rain. But, you didn't see me, get soaked to the skin so my son could have the car to go on his date. I saw you, run the yellow light just to save a few minutes of time. But, you didn't see me, trying to turn right. I saw you, cut me off because you needed to be in the lane I was in. But, you didn't see me, leave the road. I saw you, waiting impatiently for my friends to pass. But, you didn't see me. I wasn't there. I saw you, go home to your family. But, you didn't see me. Because, I died that day you cut me off. I was just a biker. A person with friends and a family. But, you didn't see me. Repost this around in hopes that people will understand the biker community . i agree i ride and i obey all signs/light/rules some think they dont need to obey the rules of the road, but they can get a ticket in some states... Do you mean bicycle riders? Or motorcycle riders? As for bicycle riders, I can agree with that. What a sad story... I have no problem sharing the road, but sometimes they aren't too smart about it. Yesterday we were driving through the mountains and there were like 6 people riding bikes. Ok, there is no bike lane, there are sharp curves that you cannot see ahead. So I was behind a few cars, and the car in the front was passing the bike riders and all of a sudden, the bike rider in the front, swerved like 4 feet into the lane. The guy in the car had to swerve all the way into the oncomming lane (just a two lane road) luckly there was no one in the other lane at that moment, otherwise it would have been a very large accident... I couldn't believe that guy just swerved over without looking to see that there was a car approaching. There was no shoulder for him to ride in anymore, so he just rode out into traffic. What a stupid place to ride bikes! |
