Do you think it's a good idea to buy a Honda Rebel 450 from 1986? |
1986 seems very old to me, but then i heard Honda a reliable motorbike. Besides, i'm a future mechanical enginineer and it seems like a good idea: engineering+motorbike... Just wanna make sure - does it break alot? At what price should i buy it if i go to a dealership? You think 1500 euros is a reasonable price for a bike mentioned above? And if possible, please help me calculate all the expenses, like gasoline, insurance, taxes anything at all, i would greatly appreciate it. 1500 if its totally immaculate. It is very reliable though. Will need a seat cover when the old one splits but otherwise it pretty much keeps running. One of my students has one. Only 'fault' was generators on early (1979/80) models, but if your training as engineer you could probably rewind primary pick up coil if it breaks Make sure its serviced before you buy it (not just an oil change ask what they did, cam chain, balancer chain, carb synch, etc) balancer chain usually has to have clutch cover removed for proper adjustment at that age. (but its easy as two bolts when cover is off, and usually only needs doing once) I believe 1500 euros works out to about $2000. Whether or not it's a good deal depends on whether the bike is in good shape. Does it have a lot of miles on it? Has it been well taken care of? Even though you're going to be an engineer, I'm pretty sure you don't want to spend a lot of time and money fixing the bike so these are questions you need to ask yourself before purchasing it. And yes, Honda is known for its reliability. I'm a former car salesman Sounds expensive, this is a basic bike and you pointed out quite old. If it is in good shape that's tempting, but you could find a better deal from a private party so I would suggest keep looking. Honda parts are expensive when it comes time to rebuild. Not terribly loony - I have a 1979 Honda CX500 (the "plastic maggot" as it's known to the Brittish) that I ride to work most days. I do think the price is a bit high, but not too far if it's been well maintained. Try to talk the seller down a few hundred. Of course, I'm judging by American standards... not too sure if depreciation is the same in Europe. Hondas are very reliable bikes but you are talking about a 20year old bike. In my area these bikes sell for $800.00 to $1700.00 US dollars depending on condition. As far as expenses go --- gas milage - 50 miles per gallon My insurance is $158.00 per year on my bike( Liability only) Taxes in my county are 8% of the value of the bike per year. If you are going to do alot of ridding I would look for a newer bike. You Can go www.kbb.com and get a general idea of the value of bikes ,cars ect. |
