I'm 19, College Student/Athlete. Should I get a motorcycle? |
Mom, who happens to be a nurse is completely against the idea, but I am paying for it, plan on getting life insurance in case anything does happen my parents will not have to bear the financial burden. I am quite aware of the risks of having a bike, but the way I look at it, i'm young once, have no current responsiblities, such as kids, girlfriends and so on. Hmmm... NO. Your attitude is the deciding factor for me. You have a bad case of Immortality Syndrome, and are already prepared to die or get badly injured before you even GET the bike! You don't act like you care about having your own mother wipe your paralyzed butt for the rest of her life, and think that being young and strong makes you a shoe-in to be a good rider. You, my friend, are an accident in the making. You never mentioned how much you know about motorcycles, what models you're looking at (though I'd guess you want a Gixxer or some similar Butt Jewelry, right?), whether you've shopped for FULL gear (more than just a helmet!), signed up for a formal training course from MSF, or considered the financial burden of an under-25 male on a sportbike. In short, had you come across as, "I've looked into a used SV650 as a starter bike, have gotten good deals on a nice full-face helmet, gloves, jacket and boots, and will be taking an MSF course in three weeks," I'd say go for it. Instead you said, "I think that riding a motorcycle takes athletic ability instead of skill, have no idea what I'm getting into, and am ready to die at a young age." So again, NO, you should not get a motorcycle until you either change your ideas of what a good rider actually IS or are prepared to do more homework before jumping blindly into something that will slap you down faster than you can think. I am in college and bought a bike at 20 years old. I dont see a problem with it. The safety course is a good idea. I have no regrets, just drive carefully. go and get one, drive carefully would be fine. Yeah, sure go ahead and get a big used motorcycle if you can afford the insurance. How good is your driving record? In some states you may have to have parental consent to buy one. Learn all about the maintenance and care of the MC, but don't be riding it in the rain or snow. Try to find a MC skill riding school. They are invaluable, but not cheap. Licensed CA smog inspector. nothing above 600cc and even 600cc if its a sports bike is hella fast for a new rider, and Im talkin about my 95 ninja, hits 60 in first gear in about 5 seconds and newer 600's blow that thing out the water. Dont buy new cause you WILL drop the bike and its really gonna hurt your feelings if your still payin for the bike and you mess it up, not to mention the dent your pocket takes on resale value. Take a MSF course and wear the proper gear (helmet, leather jacket, gloves and boots, save about 8 or 900 for that stuff if your trying to look nice in it) |
