Having cold feet about buying my first car...? |
So I'm 30, and am thinking of finally getting a car. I'm basically worried about expenses. I have a pretty hefty mortgage and I have $5000 to put towards the car (probably a used Corolla), but there's also insurance, gas, maintenance and repairs to think about. Should I get one? I can keep going on without one--no kids, live close to work, etc. But it sucks not to be able to go places whenever I want. Public transportation where I live is not frequent or reliable, and I can't ride my bike in the snow... I would suggest first figuring out if you can afford all the costs. Find out what the loan and insurance payments will cost you. Also make sure you'll have enough left over for periodic maintenance. Toyotas are pretty reliable so repair work should not be a major concern. Then figure out how much gas you expect to use on a monthly basis from the mileage of the car and add that in as well. If you can afford it and it won't put a strain on your finances, it is a great way to get more freedom in your day to day life. If you're still not sure, take your estimated costs and put that money aside every month for a few months and see if you can live without it. If so, you can afford the car. You definately need a car. And you could do a lot worse than getting a corola(They are Excellent cars). forget the car, its just a headache, keep it simple, I like your life If you have never had car insurance before you might get stuck paying a few extra bucks. but you said you have a morgage so im sure you have home owners. that might help a bit. But use the 5 grand for a used car. you really dont need to finance a new car. Dont buy from a dealer. check out the papers for a good deal or even ebay. |
