What do I need to know about motorcycles? |
I live in VA and I am 19...I hear that progressive has good rates...I would like to get a Honda CBR1000 which has about 999cc or a Honda 600FF...I really want the 1000 but im wondering a couple things... -When it comes to the insurance and financing...is the cost for these two going to make a difference (11400 vs $9500) -Is the 300cc's going to make that much difference in the handling since they are both about 50lbs diff in weight -What is the big deal about the cc's in a beginning bike, meaning what are the typical beginning rider mistakes most people talk about -Where can I find the MPG difference between the two? -I know all about the gettin my license and stuff, and I intend to get all that done when I make my purchase... -Is there anything else anyone would like to say...assume I know nothing besides what I previously just said about the license... Thanks you guys and gals.... 1000cc's can kill you 400cc's faster than the 600cc. Take the time to learn and develop instincts and reflexes before jumping on the big one. as an owner of a cbr 929 F4 I suggest you start out slow like with a 6 series or 7, a 900 or better is just too much power too soon, my first bike was a CBR 600 when I was 19 and I thought I was good until I took my brothers SRAD (1100) out for a spin and damn near killed myself - it is a world of difference. THe insurance is but a couple bucks a month difference but you can get a huge discount if you go to a motorcycle driving school which I highly recommend, I went attended one even though I was an avid rider just for the discount and ended up learning a couple of things I didnt learn from my bike club. Theres no better feeling than whippin down the highway on a crotch rocket!!!! Take your time and build up to a bigger bike. Its not worth the risk of taking a spill and ending up cripple or worst, dead. In Texas, a new rider, on the bikes you mentioned, will have to pay anywhere from $50 to $100 more on insurance per month for the extra 400cc. It is best to start on a smaller bike and get some practice and get used to riding. With the same amount of throttle, the CBR will have about 50% more power which can mean a big difference to an unexperienced rider. My first time on a CBR500 I almost dropped the bike on the first turn because I was unaccustomed to the power and handling of a sport bike and I had been riding for 3 years. My recommendation is to start of small, if you like the CBR look and style get a used 500 and ride it for a year or two, you will lose less due to depreciation and can resell it for close to what you paid for it. Then, after you have some experience, you can move up to a new CBR1000. a 1000 is a bit much for a first bike 150hp?. I guess you mean 600RR-Not FF. Really the 600 will do around 160mph if your tucked in and dont have too much of a headwind. which is just slightly above the speed limit, so you might want to start with that. do you have any riding expirence? if not look up counter steering and understand it. I work at a shop and we have a saying called " first Turn Syndrome" as in "every thing was going fine until that first turn........" |
