I dont understand why my BF said "now Im finally free!" after he sold his car?

One day my BF just goes on a rampage yelling about how much he hates the oil companies. Then a couple hours later he goes I will no longer be their slave. He cleans out his car and takes it to the lot and sells it!!!! We got into a big arguement because I said he was crazy. He then told me well I follow my beliefs. His work is 6 miles away! He runs there and back every day rain or shine. He walks to the grocery store and everywhere else. The funny thing is that without his car Ive never seen him so happy before. He is always in a good mood. Then with all the money that he is saving from not paying car insurances and taxes on his car he has been taking me out. Now Im actually glad that he sold his car. Weve been spending so much more time together walking and riding bikes. Its been about a month since he sold his car but Im still confused at what he meant by not being a slave to car and oil companies anymore. What did he mean by that?

It is a state of freedom on not being dependent upon a car. Beside the rent/mortage, a car is the next if not the largest expense in a household. If you keep track of the maintenance, car loan, insurance, taxes, gas, oil and tires expenses, you'll find that you are spending anywhere from $5K to $10K a year.

Now that he has refuted the car, he is keeping that money in savings and not owing anyone. Also, he's doing a great justice to the environment.
Exactly what he said. He felt tied down and in a ridiculous situation. I must admit that most of my money goes to gas, insurance, car payment, and maintenance like washing and waxing. Its a nice car. But cars are terrible investments. Although they are a convenient thing when u are traveling far or its raining they are a lot of money. He feels like he controls his pockets. the oil and car industries are only out for money. and without his money he feels like they arent shackeling him anymore. Good for him! I wish I could do that. But I work 25 miles from my house. LOTS OF MILEAGE I KNOW!
He meant he no longer will be tied down by the financial burden that comes with having a car. When he gave up that car he gave up the obligations of having to work with a company he was not happy with. Now without that car he is financially free to step away from a job he obviously was not happy in and be able to venture into a profession he enjoys. He was smart to do what he did. The moral of this story is, do not buy what you cannot afford for the price you pay will be with your life..
