I need information on buying a motorcycle - please help.? |
I have been looking at some sports bikes (Katana, in particular-think its Suzuki) and most of the ones I want are around $6,000 to $8,000 new. Since I have only seen pictures of cycles I am not sure what features they come with. So what I am asking is 1. What are the normal size downpayments and month to month payments a person has to make? 2. How expensive is the average insurance for a cycle, is it as much as a car? What features do cycles come with that I should ask for? Any information you feel like giving would be great even if I didn't ask about it, I want to learn as much as possible before going to a dealer. Also, what are the advantages and drawbacks of riding a motorcycle - what appeals and doesn't appeal to you. Thanks. Since this is your first bike in an ideal world you would start out with a 250cc and move up after you mastered that bike, but since this isn't a 600cc is a good starter bike as long as you respected it. I also suggest buying a used buy to start out with. Any bike can kill you if you're not wearing the proper safety equipment. Take the Motorcycle Safety Course, in most states you will get an automatic endorsement and they give you a good sound background in motorcycle safety and fundamentals. It will also give you a discount on your insurance. As far as insurance goes you will probably pay more a month for insurance than your bike payment. While a lot of states don't require it, I highly recommend getting it, if the unfortunate happens and you wreck or your bike is stolen its usually faster if you go thru your own company. Financing is kind of a shop around item on who will give you the best deal and in most cases the low interest rate only last for 2 years then jumps up real high. There are no options like when buying a car, you can order aftermarket parts thru the dealer and add the cost to your MSRP, if you do this make sure and ask for a discount. Source(s): Life experience I am assuming this is going to be your first motorcycle,if it is I can only give you this advice, take lessons from qualified instructors before buying one. Ex Intructor Ottawa Safety Council. what appeals to me is power... however this is obviously your first bike. if your someone who likes power and will get off on gassing it, you may get bored with a katana... a gsxr600 may be better.. but the katana will cost less, and will be a good starter bike. all the bikes are good, the katana is basically a tamer version of a gsxr600. since all the new sportbikes are good, it just comes down to looks/power/price. for around 8000 u could almost just get a gsxr600.. which is faster and in most peoples opinion looks better. but either way. katana will have cheaper insurance..... the very fast bikes such as r1/r6,gsxr600/1000, cbr600/1000, zx6/zx10.. will all have high insurance.. in many cases more expensive than a regular slow car. i was quoted 3000/year by progressive for my R1.. but thats a 1000cc top notch bike... luckily wisconsin does not require drivers to have insurence or i would not have the bike. payment will vary quite a bit.. it all depends on the price you pay, the length of time you repay it, and the interest rate... for this information i suggest you google whatever brand your interested in (susuki) and wade thru their site to find the sportbike division and they should have what they offer. yamaha had 3.9% and min payment of $39 for 2 years when i got my bike.. so i got that.. after 2 years it was like 17% so i just transferred it to an american express card at a permanent 3.9% .. the financing offers will be thru the cycle manufacturer, and will vary, so go to their site... other than that, there really isnt anything that comes with bikes or you would want included with the bike, so just pick out a bike that you think will be fun and not be too slow for you in 6 months. Payments are based on how much down vs how much owed Your age will determine your rate. Also # of years riding can affect it. Bike insurance is cheaper than cars, generally call Progressive Ins or website & get a quote If this is your 1st bike: as the earlier poster said get instruction get a smaller bike 250cc is what Illinois uses in its rider course & it is a good size to start on seat height is important, you need to be able to get your feet firmly down when you're learning wear a helmet, they suck but someday you may be glad you had one on ALWAYS assume that the cars don't see you, ride defensively, alert at all times move up to a bigger bike when you can confidently handle the one your currently riding The rest you'll figure out as you go along have fun Buy a used motorcycle for your first bike. Insurance will be cheaper, no payments to worry about when it breaks, and you won't feel nearly as bad about it when you lay it down and mess it up. Full coverage insurance on sport bikes can be as much or more than a car payment in some areas. |
