Motorcycle License in IL questions? |
I want to get my license. i live in N. IL, near rockford. i am trying to find drivers ed type classes for bikes. i founda free one in NIU, but too far away. cant find any more in the area. also dont want to spend too much on it. i know of a ton in WI but a friend told me that you have to be a WI resident for valid license. if i take MSF, where is this at in my area, and how much does it cost? will this help me get license, or is this something to take on the side? (as in insurance breaks, etc.) I took the MSF course. It had both in classroom and on actual bike training as well. They supplied the bikes. At the end of the course the license exam and riding test were given as part of the class. I took this in Champaign, Ill. many years ago. I now live in Rockford. You can contact the University Outreach Services in DeKalb, 800/892-9607 or 815/753-1683 or www.outreach.niu.edu/mcycle. I think they have various sites in northern Illinois. I know I have seen a group of bikes that look like a class in a large paved area at Rock Valley College, in Rockford, off Mulford Road. You may try contacting Rock Valley College as well. If these don't work, contact the Illinois Department of Transportation, www.dot.state.il.us/cycle.html Good luck. Do this soon because the best riding time of the year is now. http://www.msf-usa.org this will help you find a motorcycle safety school in your area. also, most schools use the ninja EX250 as a student bike, here is a cool video of the bike's capabilities. the only modification to the bike is a Muzzy Exhaust system. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkgwilmkd... keep in mind that this bike is classified as a beginner's bike. however it is still the same 250cc motoGP bike it was when Kawi still raced the 250cc Motorcycle Grand Prix class. Keep the shiny side up. Go to www.msf-usa.org & you'll answer all of your questions. As far as cost for the course there is only a $20 deposit that gets returned by check once you complete the course so actually the course is free. Illinois is the only state that does this right now. If you are over 18 & successfully complete the course, all you have to do is take the completion card that gets mailed to you down to the DMV & pay the $10 fee for the license. They will waiver the written & riding portion of the test. If you are under 18 it will help you obtain your license easier. The MSF course is not required if over 18 to get your license, it is highly recommended though. It is currently the only thing that is needed to effectively operate a motorcycle safely, unless you plan to do racing, if that is the case than you should go to a racing course somewhere also, such as those offered in Florida. As far as possible insurance breaks, that depends upon the insurance company you choose, as some do offer discounts for those successfully completing an MSF course & I have heard that some doesn't, along with I know Progressive Direct doesn't. www.msf-usa.org www.cyberdriveillinois.com Took the MSF course Oct of '06, got my license in Nov of '06 & got my first bike Dec of '06. IL resident myself Cutter Harley davidson in Janesville offers a class NIU helps organize the MSF class at many locations in the Chicagoland area...though the info all goes through the NIU website, there are many locations and it isn't run by NIU - just affiliated with them. http://www.outreach.niu.edu/mcycle/... If you look into the schedule you can find it in other areas. I took mine in Glen Ellyn at the College of Dupage. If you complete the course successfully they give you a card to take to the DMV and you don't have to take any other testing to get your license. The classes fill up very quickly but you can try to walk on. If you just show up the day of the class they will take as many walk ons as possible. If you just walk on the class is FREE. |
