Will tricare cover the cost of a medical airlift for a sailor who has had an accident while on leave? |
My husband is taking a ten hour motorcycle ride to Ohio to be in a friends wedding (I have tried to dissuade him). I get multiple calls a day from people at the charity where I work that go something like this: "You wouldn't believe what happened... My uncle (or other) was vacationing on his bike and had a wreck 8 hours from home, and he can't fly back home in a regular plane because he's paralyzed" Or... something to that effect. The cost of a medical airlift is often in the 10's of thousands of dollars. We can't afford that... I am trying to take any precautions necissary (other than sabotaging the bike) to make sure that we are not faced with a similar problem. You can't take out travelors insurance for a bike trip... can you? No, it won't. and no, you can't take out travel insurance (which, btw, usually only covers the cost of your tickets if you have to cancel the trip) for a bike trip. This is one of those "do it at your own risk" kinda deals. Source(s): agent, 21+ years Yes I think tricare will cover him. He is insured threw the military so that should take care of it. You may want to call tricare and talk with someone. They can tell you more. There should be a number for you to call on your insurance card, if not contact the place where your husband is stationed and they can tell you who to call. Best of luck. Let him go on his man-quest. If you were worried about his safety, you shouldn't have let him get the bike to begin with. It sounds like you are more interested in the cost of the airlift if he gets paralyzed far away than the fact that he might get paralyzed. Independent agent Reasonable man |
