Purchased a motorcycle in NJ....didn't pay NJ tax because I'd just pay NY tax when i got it home. Now, I've had the bike for 7 months, never rode it, need to get the title to sell it. Can only get the title when i register the bike. Can only register bike with proof of insurance. But why would i put insurance on a bike I'm selling in a matter of days......any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
There should be a 2 step process in this. One is applying for a title and one is registering for tags. Two totally different processes. You are required to title the vehicle when you bring it into the State. Call your local DMV office and inquire about titling only. I do it quite a bit between Ga and AL. I purchase in GA and register in AL. Although these are two different States in Two different locations, the process shouldn't"t be any different. They will usually ask the question of when did you bring the bike into the State. Pay attention to the question, because you will be penalized according to your answer. If you brought it into the State 7 months ago then you will be penalized accordingly. But if you brought it in yesterday you will not. Also you can obtain insurance for the purpose of registering it and cancel after being sold. You can retrieve all or most of your money back from the insurance company after it is sold, depending on how long it took you to sell it. If you have a buyer, purchase the insurance, register the vehicle, sell the vehicle, then cancel the insurance you pay tax when you register for the car. You can register your car in any state.
