I'm getting way out of shape for cycling because of the winter. I wanted to race this summer. Advice? |
I have some workout equipment available to me.. a treadmill, a bench, weights, jumprope... but I can't actually RIDE a bike. What is a good workout/diet for me? The snow isn't going away. (ice riding is dangerous... no health insurance yet) Hey, partner: I recommend doing indoor cycling or buying a trainer. Most bike riders do it during winter. It is really hard specially to hit the road when it is cold, and worst, windy. You can actually buy a trainer. This is a stand where you place your real bike, and adjust the intensity. They come in different patterns (air pressure or silent), so check them out in your nearest bike store. This way you don't have to go to a gym to spin if you don't want to or if you like to see people, and loud music, you can sign up in a gym where they include cycling classes with no extra cost. Don't give up during winter, we need this type of exercise to relieve impurities in our bodies.. I hope I have helped a little. Good luck! Buy a used exercise bike. have you tried joining a gym with an indoor track ,or use other equiptment like a stairclimber,or a staionary bike ,just eat a sensible diet and keep a regular schedule with your workouts til your able to start riding again If you are going to race this summer and want to be competitive then you better start working out right now!! Start working on your endurance by running on your treadmill (or try to purchase a workout bike). The speed and time varied by your fitness level. But, I suggest that you begin at a speed that you feel comfortable. It should be faster than walking speed, preferably one that you can maintain for 30 minutes. You should do this every day of the week. As you become more fit you should gradually increase both the time and the speed. You should also do some strength training. Lunges and squats are good exercises for your legs. Try to do several sets of each. You probably need to lift weights 3 or 4 days a week. Try to learn how to ride bike as soon as possible! Because riding a bike outdoors is not the same as using a workout machine. A combination of aerobic exercise and core strength training. You'll stay strong and keep your endurance up. As for me, I have a trainer that I hook up to my road bike. Turns it into a stationary bike I can ride in my basement during the Wisconsin wintertime. I like it because it's my real bike so I don't have to get used to it again after riding an "exercise bike" during the winter months. im on the same boat as you. i just dont eat a ton of sweets, get outside everyday (weather permitting), and do a few workouts when i have time. i do stuff like lifting dumb bells, pushups, leg squats, etc. i focus a lot on the legs and core to keep them strong since they are the most important muscles used in cycling. if theres a lot of snow where you live, then you might want to take up snowboarding. its a pretty intense activity, but its also loads of fun. |
