Do we need to wear a helmet?

We are planning on taking our 14 month old son on bike rides seeing that it is getting nicer out. I was wondering if we had to wear helmets including my son? we live in Michigan so i wasnt sure. we are going on the Rails for Trails. we are taking him in a "Bike Trailer". so i wasnt sure.
