50cc Scooter Costs?

Hi, this is the the first time i've used this part of Yahoo and hopefully not the last :)

At the moment i'm 15, and 1 month away from being able to ride a 50cc moped/scooter. I will use it mostly for getting to and from school but also for other stuff. I've been looking around and can't seem to find a new one that is under 拢450. Tax/registration/holder is around 拢125 and helmet 拢100. I dont know how much insurance will cost me as I haven't been able to find out due to my age.

If someone can advise me on what is a good first time bike and insurance cost i'll be very grateful.

Thank you in advance.

You're only going to get a cheap chinese import for that sort of money.
Whilst some of these are good they can be unreliable in the long run.
When I got started I bought a cheap 2nd hand one. This means that you pay less for a better scooter.
I assume that as you will be 16 you will want something like a gillera runner or speedflight.
If you do get a new one get one from a local dealer. If it goes wrong you can take it to them to fix under the warranty.
Buy Twist and go magazine that has reviews of all present scooters.
I can't recommend one personally as its nearly 30 years since I had a 50cc.
I have been back on 125 Vespas for 8 years. I used it every day to get to work until a couple of months ago when it finally died.
I now have a new LML Star which is geared.
Whatever you do invest in a good lock and a disc lock is a good idea.
If you leave it outdoors get an anchor to bolt to the floor. You then lock your scoot to this.
50cc get stolen very very regularly so be aware.
if you are any good with your hands get a Haynes manual to do your basic repairs and maintenance.
I tried to get my daughter on a 50cc about a year ago she was 16 and I think the insurance cost about 拢400.
As you're relatively young insurance will always slam you I'm afraid.
Good luck.
Email me for any help if you like.

Ok here we go. Time for an important life lesson. Price is only a small part of the whole big purchase situation. Look at the scooter shops near where you live. Service and parts become very important. A cheap scooter that you buy and can't get a part for becomes a very expensive piece of junk. Pick a name brand that has been around your area for a long time. Be VERY careful of the Chinese junk that is floating around the internet. Parts and service are next to impossible to find. The ad you showed on the link make me think you might be headed don this path.

Better to buy a good used machine if you need to hold down the cost. Some brands like Kymco, sym, Yamaha, honda have been around a long time, have performance kits available, and are a better bet. I like the Kymco Super 9, there are 70cc factory kits available that don't void warranties, and hold ther value when it is time to get a bigger scoot down the road as you get older. This is a good time to learn that price is not the only issue, that dealing with a reputable shop, building relationships, is important on big ticket purchases like scooters. The internet is a great place to learn but a bad place to buy a scooter. Good luck - Wayne
