How old were your children/child when you took their stablisers off their bikes?

I am just wondering as my son is 6 in june and next weekend i am thinking about taking his stablisers off his bike i am a single mum so planning something like this is huge as i have a 4,3, and a 18 day old as well so any tips or advice would be really great i have helmets and shin pads, elbow pads e.t.c but do i take one stabliser off at a time or both e.t.c

With my first son we took them off at around 7 yrs. I don't think he benefitted from having the stabilisers. They weren't teaching him anything and he was just using the bike like a kind of unstable trike. He learned after we took them off, although it took a while. So with my second son we didn't put the stabilisers back on, and he learned reasonably quickly.

How you approach things with your child depends on whether or not you think he is learning anything from the stabilisers. I have heard of people taking off one stabiliser but I think it's better just to take them both off. The only other thing I can suggest is to get him out on the bike to try as often as possible once you have taken them off, and don't let him give up. Everyone is different in the the time they take to learn to ride a bike but everyone can learn it.

A word of caution for your next two children. Since they are close in age, it may be tempting to get them learning at the same time. While this may be more fun for them, you must remember that the younger one will probably take longer, and must not be allowed to become discouraged if the older one gets there first. That happened to a friend of mine. Her brother, 18 months older, learned while she was still struggling and as soon as he learned, she gave up.

Good luck.

My kids were 6, but I'm thinking with my third we'll do it now, when she's 4 1/2 (the younger kids always do everything earlier!). It helps a lot to lower the bike seat as low as it will go (or use a slightly outgrown bike) so they can put their feet down easily if they need to. That gets rid of the fear factor and helped my kids learn much faster.

Good luck. I can only imagine trying to teach stuff like that as a single parent with three other kids (I'm a married parent with four kids, and I've totally pushed the bike-learning job off on my husband.) But I'm sure you're an expert at juggling things by now! It would help a lot to have a babysitter for the younger kids so you can devote all your time to running around after the one who's learning.

well, take both off at the same time, always, else he will fall or rely onthat one side, better he gets used to both at the same time, get him out to help ride the bike on his own, if you feel comfortable enough that he can ride on his own with out them, take them off, i took mines off when she was four, but than again, i am in holland and kids here learn to ride the bike before walking almost whahahaha everybody rides their bike here.
make sure he can touch the ground easaly when he stops.

good luck

my daughter is 5 and can not ride with out stabilisers. although lots of kids in her class can boys seem to better at it than girls. he'll do it with some practice every day. its the same as learning to drive for an adult! practice makes perfect! hope this helps.

training wheels? Mine was 6. But she had never really ridden a bike much before then and we kind of just persevered over the weekend until she could ride without them.

6?well hes pretty old for stablers .my parents got off my steblers when i was 4-5 . i know you are a single mom with 4 kids but you kinda exagerate in their protection .i mean he is 6..i never used helmets and the rest...is good to keep them safe but ....

My son was 4 yrs, A guy friend said he rode it very well and had great balance and he could tell he was ready. The next day they were off, a couple fall and 2 wheelin since then..lol

i would take 1 of till he gets his balance then the other or if he has asked you take them both of do that and see how he goes there will be a few accidents at first till he gets his balance

Mine was 5

Take them both off

five years old.

i was 6 and my cousin was 5
