What other sort of gear can i wear??

i recently asked on this site about getting myself a small scooter just to get to and from work on. a few days ago i went to hav a look at some brand new scooters to see what would suit me. i have all the information i need on my licence, the test, tax and insurance, but then the salesman started going into what i need to wear while on the bike. i realise that leathers are there to give a certain amount of protection incase of accidents, but i was wondering if there is an alternative to wearing just leathers? its only a scooter that only does up to 35 miles per hour, so i wondered if all this leather stuff is necessary? i dont want to be dressed like im riding a harley!!!he also mentioned boots, leather gloves, ect ect. do i need boots too?i realise that a helmet is law and for my own safty, and i havent a problem with that. could you help me out here please, as this is all new to me. thank you in advance.

thank you for all your helpful comments, but one last thing.... i havelooked on a coupleof sites for all the riding gear tha yu have all recommended and they are so expensive. i know there is no substitute for saving yur life, that goes withoutsaying, and i will buy excatly what i need, but is there anywhere that sells all what i need, like maybe a warehouse or places to look that cuts the middle man out. ifi have to pay full price, then so be it, but i am on sort of a budget at the moment... any ideas??

Sorry but have to say forget fashion, image and all the rest of it .
You will need
helmet
gloves
good boots
leather ( I mean leather not anything else) jacket
as a minimum
Despite what seems like a slow speed, tarmac and gravel and skin don't mix . You definitely need to make sure your hands are safe as that's the first thing that will hit the ground
also nylon or cotton tends to get all messed up in accidents and actually the nylon fibers tend to melt into cuts, grazes and abrasions ..

Also ladies in leathe rjackets and T shirts are actually considered to be more than just a bit sexy so your onto a winner there ..

Saw a chap riding a scooter some years ago in nothing but shorts he was doing about 25 mph and came off his whole body peeled like an orange VERy painful . If you have ever grazed a knee then think about how it would feel to graze a whole leg, back or even just the hands ..Get some proper gear it will last and then even if you give up on the bike the resale value for leather jackets etc is always a pretty good return on your investment .

At a minimum you want long pants (jeans are ok), gloves and some kind of jacket. I've crashed twice on my motorcycle bothtimes at 40 or less and both times was in the hospital for 10 days so 35 is plenty fast enough to get seriously hurt. as for boots...well I have yet to see a woman who objected to buying shoes :)

There's loads of nice textile bike gear about. I always wear textile jackets. Boots need to be sturdy and leather, Doc Marten type things would be OK on a scoot, no steel toecaps though. Get proper bike gloves, leather or textile - leather tend to be less bulky but not as warm in winter. A sturdy pair of trousers is a good idea, you can get kevlar lined jeans that look pretty nice.

I would say you need.....

Good Helmet
Good motorbike gloves
A motorcycle jacket of somekind, does not have to be leather as alot of the textile jackets are really good these days and come in loads of different styles. make sure it has protective elbow, shoulder and back pads (most generally do).
Standard jeans at a bare minimum! "Draggin Jeans" make some good jeans that are kevlar lined and look pretty good. I have some myself. you can get textile trousers too
Boots are a must as well really. again... shop about. not all are "harley" looking boots

Expect to spend 拢300-拢500 kitting yourself out. It's a small price to pay for your body and health if some idiot in a car decides to not see you!!!!!

that question was asked just below. but my answer was yes there are web site for women bikers ie

www.ladybiker.co.uk
www.girlsbike2.com

hope this helps

The Law only requires you to wear a Safety Helmet designed for Motorcycle Road Use. You cou go naked if you so desire, but I don't recommend it !
Gloves are a must, cold hands are horrible.
Boots, well I ride a big Harley and I have to admit I sometimes ride in my trainers, not recommended !!!
There are some sylish ankle type boots out there and would be ok for work as well. Wear what you feel comfortable in for the journey, It does not have to be leather, there are some modern fabrics out there that do just as good a job for weather and road protection.
If you want you could buy a body armour jacket and wear that under a nornal coat and some body armour jeans.
Enjoy the journey and you will find what you need to wear as you start to feel comfortable riding around

all these things are for your safety motorcycling is not about how good you look it's about enjoying the freedom riding brings to you so forget about fashion and here is a list of items one should have for riding
1.Helmet, full face is the best and gives you the most protection
2.gloves, winter and summer
3.leather jacket or riding jacket, the newer riding jackets are better as they have ventilation for the summer months
4.boots that cover the ankles
5.riding pants or chaps

Some people are under the delusion that a layer of leather is armor against 2000lbs of flying steel, and if they just wear their leathers it makes biking safe. This attitude makes them less safe.

If you have a minor single vehicle wreck you leather armor will save you a skinned knee or elbow. But at low speeds jeans will do fairly well, how many bicyclers do you see decked out in leather armor and they share the streets and sometimes ride fairly fast.

I have been riding for 35 years and unless I'm on a road trip I wear what I want to be wearing when I get where I'm going...and a full face helmet.

Sure if you wreck and live you will wish you were wearing the best armor money can buy. But it isn't going to save you from broken bones or death. Only riding fully aware of the road and other vehicles will make you safer.

Check these out.

leathers thats to sizes smaller than u gloves boots helmet back protecto armor full wiorks

Look at http://www.dragginjeans.com.au

It is an Australian site but the product is sold all over the world.

they are fantatstic products and trust me the kevlar lining really does work. You need the absolute best helmet you can afford and some decent boots. Do not be tempted to wear anything that does not cover your ankle. The Draggin Jeans people also do jackets which are safe and available in different styles. All of there stuff is great for abrasion protection in a crash and you can wear it off the machine as well.

I sell the stuff in my shop and only do so because it is truly is very good and believe me I am not easily impressed after 25 years of riding. I say this to be honest about how I know this stuff and not touting for business as I quite serioulsy doubt that you live anywhere near I do, so are very unlikely to walk through my door.

You need the very best protection you can get.

There is nothing more unattractive than road rash!!!!

It's true, if your riding down the road at 30mph on your scooter and just so happen to 'fall off', you may get away with just a graze and a bruise and a few torn fibres.

But that Guy/Girl just round the corner, in their little safe box, hits you at 50mph - - -

NOT a 'pretty' sight. XxX

helmet is most important its required by law. but you must have good boots and jacket. try going round few bike shops and see whats going. in dublin we have a couple of big warehouses where you can go and get everything at reduced prices. i bought jacket [fully padded] trousers[fully padded] gloves again padded and top of the range boots all for 350 euro approx-拢240. remember safety first.

Leathers on a scooter may look a little silly but will offer the best protection in case of a spill. If you do go down the denim route make sure they are specially made for motorcycling

people get so hung up on leathers - and i see you say you don't to look like you ride a Harley! I have ridden bikes for 40 years and I only ever wear jeans and a denim jacket! Yes I do have good boots and waterproof gloves, but on a scooter I don't think you need to go mad with protective cothing. I would suggest you visit local charity shops which often have a good range of motorcycle suitable clothing. New helmet of course. For waterproof over clothes try a visit to your local agricultural retailer (Mole Valley Farmers and the like) they sell real good quality waterproofs for farmers much cheaper than most shops. Any decent pair of shoes will suit you fine

Budget on ankle bone 拢10,000 ,digits say 拢1000 each elbow 拢10,000 with movement 拢15,000, get the picture the best kit you can afford will save you pain . If you feel 35 mph is slow try running down the road then throwing yourself to the ground. ..100% more fun with your clothes on.
