Please help with Ohio BMV motorcycle novice laws?

Tonight I got stopped on my bike I have had my motorcycle endorsement for 9 months. I am an MC novice until June. As far as I know, and all that's in the Motorcycle Operator's Manual, the only restriction for an MC novice is they have to wear a helmet. All motorcyclists are considered novice in their first year of having a motorcycle license/endorsement, but the cop said I wasn't allowed to ride at night! He followed me home and said if he saw me out at night again he would have my bike towed at my expense! I can't find any laws about MC novice riders in Ohio other than the helmet law. Please help me out I ride all the time including at night but now I can't until I find out for sure that it's legal! I need some printable evidence to carry with me just in case.

I believe that the officer confused restrictions placed on a temporary permit and the novice restriction on the motorcycle endorsement.

A temporary permit restricts the rider to daylight hours, helmet required, non-interstate use and no passengers.

A novice restriction on a motorcycle endorsement requires that the rider and any passenger wear a helmet.

So you are right. As a novice, you must wear a helmet. All other aspects are identical to a full motorcycle endorsement.

Vince is correct. The officer was mistaken. Having just gone through the whole Motorcycle Ohio Course, I am familiar with the MC laws. I looked them up in the ORC. If he stops you, you heard it from another cop. Be polite, but let him know that he really needs to read the ORC once in a while. Report It
