If i go out to ride my bike with my 16 mo. old baby on his carrier seat, does he has to have a helmet? do i?

i want to ride with my baby, but i don't know if i have to put a helmet on k=him, what do you think? and which one is the best and safest baby carrier? thank you!

A helmet is a MUST for both of you. Imagine if YOU got hurt... what would your son do?

Regarding child carriers, I have always been partial to the Rhode Gear Ultimate. This seat actually mounts onto an included aluminum rack so when you aren't carrying "Junior" around you can remove the seat part and have a nice luggage rack instead. They cost about $150 and are well worth it. Don't try to save money on a child carrier.

As you proceed, remember that you should NEVER have your child sitting in the seat while the bike kickstand is down. Kickstands support bikes, not people, and ESPECIALLY not babies.

Yes and YES! to the helmet question.

I don't know any difference to the bicycle mounted child seats. They all seem the same. Just double check that they have 4 or 5 point seat belts, just in case you would lay the bike down (crash). The child that is held in place is the safest.

I ride with my grandson who is now 2. I bought him his first helmet at 1. We both wear our helmets riding together.

Edit: rmalik23 -- Helmets are not always required. Common sense is required. Natural selection happens. Wear a helmet -- even when not required.

A helmet is required at any age, and at any experience. You can never be too careful.

yes and no to u

ok if you go over a curb or something happens to make you fall guess what....the baby is going with you! hmmmmm...dont babies have soft skulls? might be like dropping an egg on the concrete. you sure your ready to be a mom?

Safety of the baby is must... but dont take him in bike

Always put a helmet on babies, its up to you whether you wear one or not but the baby is innocent and has a mom to make the safe choices for him!!!=D

Common sense must prevail. He should obviously have a helmet to protect his head. You should have a helmet to protect his mother's head. You won't be able to care for him if you get a serious head injury because you weren't wearing a helmet, regardless of what the laws say.

HTH

Common sense says:
1 - Both of you wear a helmet (This is not a law or legal requirement... it is COMMON SENSE!)
2 - Ditch the Baby carrier for a trailer. baby carriers put your child at risk in the event you are involved in an accident.

Bicycle mounted baby carriers are unsafe period. A number of bike shops here in PDX have stopped selling them for that reason. With a trailer, you dont have to worry about the child falling to far from above and hitting the ground and/or having you land on top of them.

Your baby is TOO Young to be riding with you !!! You can damage his / her brain by all that rough movement. I think you should leave your baby home, and enjoy the ride by yourself !
ANYONE on a bike should wear a helmet !!!

You will be much happier if you get a pull behind kid trailer. Nice ones like Burly are available for a couple hundred. Inexpensive models by in-step/Schwinn are available for less than 100.

The main advantage to a trailer is your child is well protected and the trailer is very difficult to turn over.

If you tip a bike with a child carrier on the back, your child has a significant chance of hitting the ground hard. Even if you ride careful, you can tip a bike over.

Some child carriers have side supports so your kid will have some lateral protection if you tip.

Regardless, the only folks that won't wear helmets are idiots. It isn't required by law, but it should be.

Helmets are a must!

It is safer for the child to ride in a trailer! There is more protection plus if you go down the trailer won't.

And to Carl_the: No the baby isn't to young and you cannot damage the brain. Is your answer well researched?

NEVER NEVER use a baby carrier on a bike.
Get a trailer, I got one for my Grandkids.
1 and 2 years old, Plenty room for kids and misc items.
Got it a Wal-mart
The kids love it. Plus they don't drop any toys.

Also make sure you carry some type of ID.
A helmet is a very good idea.
Always make sure to put the screen down to protect
the baby from stones etc. from your back wheel.

Helmet requirements vary from state to state.

In general, anyone with a brain ought to be wearing one. Blondes are exempt for obvious reasons.

Trailers are far safer for little ones than carrier seats.

wouldnt you put a helmet on your baby anyway? i dont think you really needed to ask that question
