Everyone should have to wear a helmet when riding a bike?

Give a specify examples about why you feel the way you do.

Well, the reason is just because it can make the difference between cracking your head open and dying or not.

because if you dont the risk of you getting killed is alot more higher

No-- Its a free county.

Rule Nazis are going to ruin this country.

Well I don't ride one but my brother used to everyday to work and he got sideswiped by a car one day and his helmet split in 2..If he didn't have it on that would have been his head...THANK GOD for helmets! He is fine but doesn't ride a bike anymore...
I agree that its up to the person , but it does save lives and NO accident is ever planned.
I also know of 2 guys that are still alive because of helmets on motorcyles..They were banged up pretty bad but are still alive and getting better each day....

You probably should, but it should be a choice, not mandated by gov't.

I don't know about everyone, but I do because:

1. I have stuff between my ears that I feel is worth protecting.
2. Helmets are cheap, light and readily available.
3. Its important to set a good example for all the doofi out there riding around, as well as my kids and grandkids.
4. Its as easy to wear one as not, so I might as well tilt the odds a little more in my favor.

Edit: MR , you really should wear underpants. The skid marks on your Dockers are the height of gauche.

because a broken head doesn't heal the same way an arm or leg does.

free country, i do most of the time, should do all of the time, never know when an accident might happen. guy i know fell off at about 2mph, cracked his head on a kerb and is now a cabbage.

i have had two wrecks where i hit my head bad. i dont remember either, and just know what others told me. i am not sure i would have walked away at all if it werent for the helmet. i began riding before helmets were popular. i never wore a helmet back then, and then i had my first bad crash. i dont know why i picked up my vetta that day, but i hate to think what would have happened without it. even with it, i was knocked out and the helmet was broken. i just think how that would have been my skull without the vetta.

Freedom of choice. I do wear one, but don't want the Gestapo telling me I have to. Next they'll be telling me to wear underpants!

EDIT: Some buffoon gave me a thumbs down... likely 'cause I mis-spelled "gestapo", it's fixed now. Certainly couldn't be for a valid opinion would it be Mr. Gestapo man?

BTW, I know of 3 people who died in car accidents. They wore seat belts but got there heads cracked open anyway. Race drivers wear helmets, so ALL drivers should right?

Any comments? (be sure you have your ducks in a row before you stick your foot in your mouth!)

I always wear a helmet, and I think little kids should be required to wear helmets, but I could care less if other adults are wearing helmets. It's not the government's responsibility to protect people from themselves, but it is in their best interest to keep their citizens (did I say ''citizens''? I'm sorry, I meant ''consumers") alive (and paying taxes). If this country had MANDATORY universal health coverage, I could ALMOST understand legislating things like helmets and seatbelts, but where would it end? Cigarettes, Fast Food, Unprotected Sex, and Televison are all POTENTIALLY hazardous to a person's health, so if you want to make the arguement that the government has a responsibility to legislate "RISKY" behavior, then you can't just stop at bike helmets.

Good Story Ian m - !!!!!

YAWN !!!!!!!!

I am a huge believer in free choice, - Don't get me on my soapbox about this, but you are NOT going to become a drooling vegetable if you don't wear one!

Don't give in to overreactive namby pambies, this (and many other issues) should always be a question of Personal Responsibility!

.

I do not think it should be made compulsory to wear a cycle helmet. I have one but I use it only when it is compulsory such as racing. Cyclists still get killed and injured when wearing them and they are only designed for a 15 MPH equivalent bump. More lives would be saved if all motorists and their passengers wore helmets as rally drivers do.

no no no..will the government make you wear a jock strap too?

When I raced (1968-72) helmets were not required. The Styrofoam wonders didn't even exist. We mostly had a layer of cotton bicycling hat (or this leather web) between the asphalt and our skull. Yes, I rolled a couple front tubulars (NO, M R bicycle brain injury isn't my problem- HA!) and managed to not kill myself.

When modern helmets were brought to market, I bought a helmet and I wear it without a requirement.

NO HELMET LAWS, period. In my opinion WEAR A HELMET. Make it your choice. Laws that are made to save us from ourselves are a product of the control freak socialists who aren't happy until they control all aspects of your daily life to make themselves feel they have accomplished something worthwile. (now I shall step off my soap box)

True story: 3 friends planned a bike ride the next day. One of them had stopped wearing his helmet recently. The other 2 always wore helmets and joked with him, "If you fall off your bike and hit your head we won't even stop for you." Next day he shows up for ride - with his dusty helmet on. One hour later a car intentionally plows into the riders. 2 are hit. 1 was not (me). The rider who wore his helmet went over the car and almost went through the windshield. The car drove away and was found later. It had been stolen - the bad guys were never caught.

Later the doctor in the hospital brought a plastic bag into the room that contained the pieces of the rider's helmet. He told us our friend would have died that day if he had not had his helmet on. The fellow was in a coma for many weeks and eventually recovered but it was a long road.

If you ride enough miles on your bike your time will come when that helmet will come in very handy..
