Helmet Recommendation?

I'm looking for a helmet that basically looks cool, one thats not so huge and makes you look like a dork, and has a good crash test rating. I need it for long distance and local biking.

The weight weenies, and ventilation conscious will flame me for this (as well they should), but I am very partial to my Pro-Tec Ace Dig. It fits well, it's not too heavy (compared to the hardhat I'm used to wearing), it's doesn't make me look like I just got off a space ship, and best of all, it's TOUGH. Most helmets are toast after any kind of impact. The Pro-Tec Ace Dig is a multiple impact helmet designed to take big hits. Did I mention that it's pretty darn stylie? You can pick one up for about forty five bucks from JensonUSA. Drawbacks? Heavy, hot in the summer, and it might get you negative attention from snobs. Most of my riding is on the dirt, and I live in a small town where everyone hates bikes, so nobody really gives me any crap about it. Pro-Tec also makes a helmet called the cyphon, which is lighter, with better ventilation. Good Luck.

Look up the safety ratings. The helmet I wear is actually a cheap child's helmet that was under $20! But it also had a high crash rating. It has cute little bees on it.

I've been riding MTB and road for the past 20 years or so, a little bit of comp in the early days. Great / comfy helmets used to be well expensive, and it seemed back then you either had a Giro shaped head or a Bell shaped head... Bell and Giro being brands not objects.

Funnily enough one assimilated the other.

Anyway, not sure where your from but being in Australia is probably the reason why their helmets are expensive...

that's where Tec helmets come in. They're made in New Zealand and are just as good as their US counterparts. Big upside is they are uber cheap.

Check these prices out, and that's retail in NZ dollars...

If you are USA and can find someone in the USA who stocks em go check em out. Great safety, great comfort, great looks, light and cheap.

You can be sure that ANY hat you buy will have a nationally accredited crash rating or standard.

The helmets in EBAY ( Sporting Goods section) are so many--Giro, Bell etc. (www.ebay.com).

Forget the safety talk. Helmets are all about styling. Sure get one that fits, but get one the looks the part. Nothing worse than having a bad helmet day. Or seeing others having a bad helmet day and being totally oblivious of their crime.

Yes, fully a victim of fashion. But feeling good and riding well and confidently is so much about the things you choose to ride and the things you wear while riding them.

Specialized churn small islands of cash into R&D, their skid lids are usually at the coal face of the latest tech and design features. Not cheap but. Still as a fashion victim I kid myself that by blowing the big bucks is helping to keep push the bounds of new helmet technologies. I could never blow that amount of cash thinking about safety first.

Forget safty....go on Ebay and get an old Italian hairnet!!!!

Wow! Damian never seems to 'pull his punches'! lol

I bought my helmet because it matches my bike, lets face it they all make you look a bit dorky, but it's part of the kit!

Forget safety ratings bicycle helmets aren't as good as people think they are when it comes to an accident! but something is better than nothing!

No tips, buy what you like.
