How do you measure for a motorcycle helmet?

New bf has a bike and wants me to go out with him, but I don't own a helmet! No biker shops nearby so I want to mail order one. Any help is appreciated!

DO NOT mail-order a helmet. The only way to find one that fits is to try them on. They should be comfortable, not too loose, not too tight (which causes VERY bad headaches). Can only recommend that you go to a reputable bike shop, and try before you buy. Remember that it is YOUR head that is being protected, so buy the best,(not always the most expensive) that you can. I have found that different makes of helmet have different shapes of padding inside them. One size of one brand fits me very well, same size in another brand does not.

get a medium size one and wear .......

Don't order one with out knowing your size I'm a biker and a bike mechanic and a helmet will not save your life if it dosen't fit trust me i know from exp. you want a helmet that fits snug but dosent cause your head to hurt, and you want a helmet that fits so it dosen't fly up or come down over your eyes so you cant see the road just cause your not driving the bike dosent mean you don't need your eyes on the road. Get a DOT approved helmet there safer and meet the department of transportation standards. I have fallen of my bike without a helmet on and i hurts like a mother

You really should try on a helmet before you buy. Different manufacturers use different models for heads. Some are round and some are for more narrow heads. Unlike a hat, a helmet has little give so simply getting the right size may not be a good fit.

JUST MAKE SURE WHEREVER YOU BUY IT FROM HAS A RETURN POLICY AND DOT APROVED

How to find your size ?

Please use a cloth tape to take your measurement. It is better to have a helper do the measuring in order to get a more accurate measurement. The circumference of the head should be measured at a point approximately one inch above the eyebrows, or at whatever point gives the largest possible measurement. If you find that your measurement falls between two sizes, choose the smaller size.

XS - 20 1/4 - 20 7/8" ( or 52-53 cm)
S - 21 - 21 5/8" ( or 54-55 cm)
M - 21 3/4 - 22 3/8" ( or 56-57 cm)
L - 22 1/2 - 23 1/8" ( or 58-59 cm)
XL - 23 1/4 - 24" ( or 60-61 cm)
XXL - 24 1/8 - 24 7/8" ( 62-63 cm)

Here's a useful website which not only compares helmets but also tells you how to measure your head for one. Although I would hesitate to buy a helmet online, you may not have a choice so this website will help. http://www.originalkds.com/helmets.htm and here's another one too http://www.ironhorsehelmets.com/sizing.h...

Hey,

I am with the other folks!

I have been everything from large to XXXL in a helmet for the same size head (maybe my head gets swelled).

You gotta try them, just the way it is!

Kudos on riding with your Boyfriend, he's a lucky guy!

Did your BF buy his bike at a shop? If so, go in and ask if they have any helmets you could try for size.

I'd never buy a helmet without trying it on, no matter the price. Different manufacturers == different sizes.

If you know anyone who has a bike, besides the BF see if you can try on their helmets.

Good luck :)

I think you can go to LoveBiker.com to find the answer, because there are lots of professional bikers who can give you good suggestions. Wish you good luck!

Walmart has an ok inventory of mc helmets....you have to try it on....NEVER buy a used helmet, or buy one on the internet, you have no guarantee that it will fit.....this is a matter of life and death.

I think u'd better not maon order one because it may not suit u. I meet many friends on a site called bikerkiss. They say the best way is going to the shop.
