What is a good price for a 2007 SV650s?

I am looking to buy an SV650S. So far this decisions has been been placed on price, insurance cost, easability in riding (based on what I have reasearched), and overall looks. Once I get to the dealership it will get my final approval based on the feel when I actually get on it. But assuming that I still love the feel of the bike, how do I begin the haggling process. This is the first bike for me and I don't want to be taken advantage of. Currently near where I live, Los Angeles area, one is being adverticed as a new 2007 for $6199 OTD. Could this really be an out the door price? Can I haggle on an OTD price? Am i only allowed to touch and sit on the bike at the dealership? Could I ask them to throw in gear in the deal such as a jacket or a helmet or something?

Well you already gave yourself the answer to your first question. That is a good price as it easily sells for eight elsewhere.

This ad could really be the otd price. Even though it's darn near invoice, they can make their profit back in incentives, rebates, and other discounts offered from the factory. Also the unfair competition law in this state makes it so it has to be true. The only loophole I've seen many LA dealers use is check the small print in the bottom corner of the ad for something like (#S7021) and they will try and sell you on different price or probably a different bike altogether.

By no means is the otd price final. But like I just said they already slashed their profits by nearly $2G. If they go any lower it's just for their sales volume numbers which are about as important as points are in Y!A. Bikes have been selling now a days, so it's not like they're going to be hurting. Would you be willing to lose the upper fairing if they offered you a non-S model for $5,899? You may have to give a little to get a little. Or you can try to say you've also been looking at the EX650R and GT650S and you have found them both reasonably priced and if they have any flexibility to make your decision any easier for you to buy that day.

Test rides are not completely unheard of for licensed riders. Rare but not impossible. Many new models may sit on the floor for a good six months, so chances are they won't add fluids until that title is signed. Touch it, sit on it, make love to it, and then buy. I could of stayed all day on the SV650 with the wider handlebars but couldn't last more than five minutes on the standard position of the SV650S. I've seen the handlebars interchangeable on both models. I have never figured out why people by aftermarket fairings to make their SV650S look like the EX650R. You need to have a full fairing on a parallel twin but there is nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about an attractively seksi V-twin.

Throwing in extra gear is very common when you pay the $8G price because when they give you $600 worth of gear it really only cost them $300 so they still pull in $2G profit. For them to do this they'd have to take a loss today and wait for the factory to later credit their account when they would then break even at best. The only way this is going to happen is if they're concerned with the numbers, but as I've mentioned here in So.Cal sales volumes have steadily been increasing. If it were me I'd say sell me $100 gloves, $200 jacket, and $300 helmet at cost or maybe 5% above cost and so you'll buy the bike plus gear for $6,500 otd. Or maybe at the very lowest the gear plus the bike minus its upper faring for $6G.

Having an SV650 might not be a bad idea. Just imagine how p/o'd you'd be cracking the fairing on an '07 SV650S you've owned for less than 6 months. In fact having a slightly used first bike might be the way to go. Especially if your not planning on financing and got the cash. You can get like an '03/'04 with 8K-12K miles on it for under $4G. And then when you forget to kick your side stand breaking your left turn signal and clutch lever, now you only got to spend a couple dubs to make it good again. Otherwise you'd be spending five bills to fix what you already spent $6,500 on. Just my two cents and the fact that my friend is selling a previously enjoyed SV650S. */End of Line.
Just a thought: Hyosung makes a bike very similar to the SV650. It can be had for 5200, new. Used, I have seen them as low as 4k, with less than 1000 miles. If you have a good dealer close by, you might wanna check one out. The GT650 has a full fairing, if you like that look. Hyosung is the subcontractor for most of the parts for the SV650, so you would think it would be a pretty solid bike.
