Do I need a new motorcycle? |
I got passed by a 2-up scooter on the 134 freeway today! Should I get a new bike, or should I just lean on the throttle more? Maybe I should get a new helmet? 1985 Yamaha Virago 700 ratbike, 80,000+ miles on it. In 90% of the riding situations out there... it's not the bike ;) thats your choice. I have a suzuki burgman that scoots along quite nicely and without all the noise and fanfair just whisper quiet and fast. but I dont speed just keep out of the way. If speed is what your looking for, try a tune up with a jet kit for your carb, new pipes without baffles and use 92 octane for quick response. You got passed because your rat couldn't keep up? If that's the case I'd say yeah it's time to find a new rat or time for a good tune up or overhaul. At 80,000 miles your clutch may be a little out of it and/or the whole engine needs gone through. There was a demon that lived in the street. They said whoever challenged him would die. Their controls would freeze up, their motorcycles would buffet wildly, and they would disintegrate. The demon lived at Mach 1 on the meter, One hundred and ten miles an hour, where the air could no longer move out of the way. He lived behind a barrier through which they said no man could ever pass. They called it the Virago barrier. When I got my bike, it was used and hadn't been ridden in a while. It felt sluggish to me so I had an experienced friend try it. He said it didn't have enough power to get out of the way. So I took it in for service. They said it was carbon fouled and after they finished working on it, it was a lot better. Then one day the engine started "missing." That got more and more frequent. Back in it went and they replaced the air manifold seal. It has been sweet since then. 80K miles. Small engines work hard. At some point, they start needing things like new rings and perhaps more extensive overhaul. My knowledge is limited to lawn mower and snow blower engines. Unless it's a real expensive rider, I never recommend a rebuild but a replacement to get the latest technology. Try a tune up by a trusted mechanic. If it doesn't give you the pep you are looking for, sell and by one with lower miles. On the other hand, I would sure like to have a 1941 Indian. I like the fact that there are still people out ther that still ride the 80's bikes. (80's kz's for me). Ya go ahead and up grade but keep it rat and keep it 80's man. |
