Aren't cyclists afraid of being hit by a car? |
They ride on the road like one and cut in front of me, and I don't always see them right away. I like cycling, but I refuse to wear the whole get up and helmet and ride in the middle of the road. I know that they can run out of trails and need to bike several hundred miles a day to stay in tip top shape, but it just seems dangerous to me. Hey, Honestly, when I started riding on the road, I was so scared! I am now totally confident, and can do it with ease. It took a heck of a lot of practice though... I find, if you do what you're supposed to , for example, use lights when its dark, use hand signals, follow traffic rules, then it becomes easier. I am treated like a vehicle, so I act like a vehicle - kind of like a slow motorcycle would. Most important is just to stay alert, follow the rules of the road, and bike in a straight line. One last note** I work in a bike shop, and see more bikes from crashes, where they were on the sidewalk. Cars can expect to see you on the road, but on the sidewalk, they are only looking for pedestrians... they don't look far down the sidewalks to see if bikes are comming... Source(s): work in a shop Yup! Cars hurt when they hit you... Yea I am, hell, just recently a Olympic runner was just hit by a car here. So it can happen to anyone.I was riding on the paved trails and was not wearing a helmet. Now that I have exhausted the trails I have ventured out on to the road. I was nervous the first time. I try to be very aware of my surroundings on the road. I obey all the traffic laws. I'm am settling in and getting more comfortable but not complacent. Needless to say, I have sucked it up and put the helmet on. I still laugh at myself when I see my reflection, but I'd rather look funny and avoid a serious injury. Good luck. Not after you've been riding a while. You learn how to ride with motor vehicles. Also, it is generally the law to ride in the street since a bicycle is a vehicle- NOT A TOY!! It's your choice whether or not to wear the gear but if you ride fast, the street is the safest place. Getting hit by a car? It can happen no matter what you're doing. Ask people that have been plowed into while waiting at bus stops. If I'm in the street, I have a better chance of being seen. I've been hit five times. Best advice is from the motorcycle "Ride like you're invisable". Assume no one can see you. Don't look at the drivers. Look at their front tires. The driver can lie to you with his eyes or a gesture. That tire is going where the car is going. Lived to tell about it! |
