What鈥檚 a good bicycle helmet to buy?

I was an avid cyclist in the early 80鈥檚, but traded my bike in for a pair of running shoes. After years of abusing my knees, I鈥檓 trying to get back into riding.

I鈥檓 taking it slooowww. Evenn though I expect to ride mostly on the street, I got a mountain bike. I鈥檓 starting out on a Trek (http://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/archive.... ) 4500, not that I鈥檒l be doing any real off-road riding. (I might get crazy and ride of the curb of the sidewalk occasionally 鈥? Yeeee Haaaa!!!)

I鈥檓 told everyone wears helmets now. I know a helmet should fit properly, but what else should I look for in a helmet? What are some good brands? Good web sites? Which helmets will make me look like a dork? Which are the cool ones?

Thanks.

Also, let me know what you think of this:

giro or bell. both amazing helmets. both will save your head if you crash. theres also project rudy helmets, they also sell eyeware if youd care to look into that as well. helmets dont need to look cool while most still do, get one with alot of air vents, good padding, and fits your head correctly. id always reccomend going into your local shop to check what they say as well.
A helmet should fit your head snugly, like a baseball cap. you should be able to put it on your head with the front just above your eyebrows, and without strapping it on lean forward without it falling off your head.

But different helmet makers have different shapes to their molds, and one brand will fit better than others. You need to go try them on at your local bike shop(s) and decide which one is better for you.

As far as price goes, the costlier models will get you better ventilation, better fit and lighter weight.
I would stick with better-known brands, and also, it's very worth it to buy a helmet at a local bike shop rather than at a department store. All helmets sold must meet minimum safety requirements, but if you spend less than about $35 you're going to be missing out on a lot of comfort. Giros are my favorite helmets, and Bells are solid and fit most people well (although most of their stuff is, as you've called it, a little dorky looking). The more you pay, the more air vents you'll get, which can lend a lot to your pleasure while riding. It's just smart to wear a helmet, too, especially if you're going to be on roads with traffic.

I would go to nashbar.com and buy one on closeout. Last years model is just as good but you will save money and no one will know. The more ventilation in a helmet the better. Bell and Giro make excellent ones, can't go wrong with one of those.
I reccomend a fox flux helmet, or a giro xen. They are both really good helmets, stylish, and they have many vents to keep your head cool.
