Why do new bicycle helmets have that front "dig/visor" instead of a regularly-shaped helmet front?


What do they do?

They do that because it gives you more protection to the forehead. It is also like that because it is the new style
My old pal Uncle Neal is pretty close, but here is the total answer.

The visor does 2 major things for the cyclist.
First, it diverts more air into the vents of the helmet to keep the head cooler, a cooler rider is capable of riding longer.
Second, it shields the riders eyes from the sun, preventing fatigue. A less fatigued rider ALSO is capable of riding longer!

And they are designed to break off with a minimum of force, so the problems they may otherwise cause in an accident are negligible at best, so 2 major up sides and almost no down side seems to work!

as for your additional question, unless the visor is molded into the body of the helmet, which is VERY rare, it will detach with some minor effort using something like thumb locks, or a screw device of some type.

Generally speaking the helmets with visors are more geared for mountain bikes, sans visor is road riding.

But that's not a hard and fast rule.

I mostly road ride and use a visored helmet for the shade, I had a scare with skin cancer so got the message real hard from my Dr. to shade my face.

If you road ride you may find the visor impedes your vision, especially if your bike is fit with a very aerodynamic position (drop bars). Then shade or not you'll want a road (no visor or one you can remove) helmet.

If you ride a hybrid, flat bar road bike or even just fit more upright than either will do.

Just wear a helmet 8-)
