What should a simple bicycle helmet cost? I think some sports stores are way over-priced? |
WEll, I'm on a budget, and I returned a helmet to Target for $15.00. Now, I thought maybe it was cheap, but then when I look at the $40.00 helmets at Sports Authority and Dick's Sporting Goods, I wonder if they're the same quality, just over-priced, or if I'm really getting somethign better? Right price? Good store in Albany, NY or national chain? More expensive doesn't mean safer. The main thing you're looking for is if it is certified to meet certain standards of safety. The pricier helmets usually cost more for reasons other than safety: design, lighter materials, more ventilation, more "advanced" or easier strapping systems, and their higher price has nothing to do with safety. Perhaps the "lightness" feature (the helmet being lighter in weight) may be important enough for you to pay more, but I don't know that any helmets are "heavy." The important thing is to look for is a helmet that meets safety standards and that has a good fit for your head (so try it on before you buy and compare the fit of different models). Source(s): http://www.bicycling.com/article/0,6610,... http://www.toronto.ca/cycling/safety/hel... I recently bought a bike helmet for $35 at a bike store.. it was the cheapest one there. The other helmets ran up past $100, so I felt like I was getting a deal. Since you're investing in your safety, I think the extra $25 is worth it. This guy is glad he had a helmet: Truck runs over cyclist's head By COLIN FLY, Associated Press Writer Tue May 15, 2:17 PM ET MILWAUKEE - Ryan Lipscomb lived to tell how it felt to have a truck run over his head. "Really strange," he said. Lipscomb, 26 of Seattle, suffered a concussion but was otherwise unhurt. He was shaken up, especially after he saw his mangled helmet. Lipscomb, a graduate student in medical physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was riding down a bike path in Madison on Friday afternoon. As he approached an intersection, he said, he noticed the oncoming delivery truck preparing to make a right turn in front of him. The truck wasn't going to stop, Lipscomb said, so he slammed on his brakes, flipping his bike and landing in the street. A moment later the truck rolled over his head. "I didn't see it coming, but I sure felt it roll over my head," he told The Capital Times newspaper. "It feels really strange to have a truck run over your head." His black helmet was flattened, tread marks visible on the cracked frame. Lipscomb was taken to a hospital and released about three hours later. Police initially declined to call the incident a hit-and-run, saying it was unclear whether the driver knew someone had been hit. But Sgt. Bernie Gonzalez later updated the accident report to include the designation. Police spokesman Mike Hanson said Tuesday there haven't been any arrests because investigators haven't been able to identity the driver. In a telephone interview Tuesday with The Associated Press, Lipscomb said he has had some lingering headaches and a stiff neck. "All things considered, that's about as good as it can get," he said. Despite the close call, he said, he has to focus on school because his qualifying exam for the Ph.D program is next week. "I think it will probably hit me when I'm done with exams," Lipscomb said. Lipscomb does plan to ride again, he just prefers to wait until after exams are over. "After that, I'll go out and get a new helmet and be back on my bike," he said. I bought mine at Target and I didn't think it was too badly priced. It was 15-20 if I remember correctly. Sometimes too, if you watch the sale ads on Sundays they'll have good prices on them with the cycling season getting into full gear. Good luck! As long as the helmet is CSPC or Snell foundation certified, then go for best price. Try Colorado Cyclist. Oh yeah, dont buy used, after a helmet has hit the ground, even if it looks OK, get rid of it, they are only good for one shot. droopydog is right about the ANSI Snell certification, but there are no deals to be had at colorado cyclist. Any department store (target is good) will sell bike helmets with the ANSI Snell certification. The only difference is style. It depends on what you want to be seen in. I would recommend www.performancebike.com for good selection and price over colorado cyclist. In either case, you won't find $40 helmets. Another thing to consider is fit. Buying a helmet over the web is risky because you don't know how the helmet will feel. If you go to Target, you can try them on. I have a really nice Bell helment that I bought a few years ago that I can't wear because it's too 'round' for my head. I can't get it comfortable no matter how I screw around with the padding. $40 is actually a very good price. I wouldn't hesitate to spend that on a helmet I liked. Most of mine are in the $80-120 range, but then they are subsidized by my team so I usually pay not much more than $50. |
