*Vultures Knob>>>Bike Helmet

It has been determined, that bicycle riders (non-professional) who wear helmets have been hurt riding their...

...bike 10 times as much as those who don't...this is because the helmet gives them a "false" impression of safety, so they take 10 times less care avoiding an accident...

(when I was growing up, only wussies wore helmets, and to this day, I refuse to wear one...'cause I'm not a wussie...)...

And I've never been in a bicycle accident, because I value my cranium more than anything...

This is yet another form of traditional wisdom that has been turned upside down on its head (pardon the pun)...and I always noticed those helmets block a little bit of wide peripheral vision...

Why am I not surprised by this fact...? Have you noticed any "traditional wisdom" in your own life that your own experience contradicts and proves flat out wrong...?

(Disclaimer: This same fact does not hold true for motorcycles...this is due to the "speed of travel" difference between the two activities...)

Taiwanese monks shave the top of their heads because they believe it makes them closer to God or more intelligent, anything is possible.
That is entirely untrue. I know you're not going to select me for best answer, but I hope anyone reading your question will read this. Multiple studies have found that helmets prevent injuries. See my source list. To quote from one:

"The risk of serious head injury was significantly greater when a helmet was not worn (chi 2 0.01 < p < 0.05) This represents an odds ratio of 3.12 [confidence interval (CI) = 95% 1.13-8.75]. . . . CONCLUSIONS. Helmets afford a protective effect with respect to serious head injuries."

Please stop spreading this information. If you have sources to your studies, please list them.

Im kind of afraid to answer because I dont want to hurt your feelings again- but I never wore a helmet growing up and was never in an accident , helmets are for wussies
We in the American Safety Society, ***, want to take exception to your comments and deductions that you have made due to , what is obviously, incomplete facts.

While it is well know that our riders that wear helmets do suffer an increased mortality rate, many other factors must be considered.

We have long encouraged our members to take a "holier than thou" attitude. As such, in their interpretation of our goals, they not only ignore most common traffic laws, such as stop signs, red lights, and right of way, but also smugly treat motor vehicle drivers as nothing but worthless smog producers.

Add to that those wonderful little tight Spandex shorts, and you have a recipe for a true social statement.

While many common people may complain, we do more than our part as organ donors.

Except for the brain of course.
while i think what you say is partially true i also believe that it depends on the person b/c i have gotten in about 6 bike accidents and only twice was i wearing a helmet
These laws were pushed forward by the supreme nannies in the liberal political rolls. Remember that it was for the children?
How many times can they use this mantra to goad people into surrendering their freedoms for the sake of some imaginary problem?
Children learn the same way we do. they get hurt. If we take away all the painful stimulus, they won't learn when to slow down. Children don't normally think the world will hurt them. It is a learned condition.
Helmets are not for wussies. They are for drag racers, stock car racers, police officers, firefighters, soldiers, astronauts etc...But I don't believe the common citizen should be forced to wear a helmet. That is the decision of adults in their own families. The law extends too far into the rights of the parents.
