First motorcycle, CBR, FZ6, Ninja 250/500, etc? |
Okay, I am looking into purchasing my first motorcycle. I am going to take the motorcycle safety course before I even buy the bike though but I would like to know what options could be available to me and what opinions more experienced riders have for me. I'm 5'10", 200 lbs. I've always been facinated by bikes but never ridden a motorcycle. LOTS of bicycles (mountain, road, etc) but I don't know if that will make a difference or not. As stated, i'm going to take the course at the beginning of next month and afterwords find a bike. I'm looking at a couple and was wondering what you all though. My thoughts are the CBR600, a FZ6, a Ninja 250 or 500, GS500 or Katana 600. haven't decided on new or used one but thinking used might be better. Do dealerships carry used bikes? What do you all think about these choices? Am I looking where I should be or am I shooting too high. I'd like to keep the price under $8500 for the bike and helmet/gloves/jacket to start. Anything else I should consider? "Dude...Stay away from anything above 500cc & up. The newest & Latest crop of sportbikes WILL KILL YOU in a heartbeat if you don't know what your'e doing. These Bikes are primarily focused on winning races on a racetrack, Street Usability Second,no mods necessary & right Out-of-the box! These bikes also demand a lot of respect from the rider...which newbies like You would never understand until later years of riding.I Personally recommend the Ninja 250.It's a Very forgiving motorcycle if you get over your head, 75 miles/gallon anyway you whack the throttle...it's seat height friendly to anyone to rides it & it will teach you the very basics of riding. Did I mention that this bike tops @: 110 MPH? This bike cost less than $4K out-the-door! I know because i have & ride one everyday. I'm a rider of 9 years now; 5'3" in height, 180 lbs.,had 10 motorcycles in those 9 yrs. with 4 states + Canada toured under my experience belt...so i know what i'm talking about here. This bike is all you need for the time being that you'll be learning. Then if you think you outgrew it & u think your'e ready for a bigger bike then go for it. But for now stick to any bike that's 250cc to 500cc. You'll only need a minimum of 250cc to do freeway/interstate riding. I had known a lot of newbies whom i warned not to get something big like a 600, never listened then got to an accident w/ horrific injuries. One 19 yr.old kid lost both of his legs. One ended up in a coma for 4 months due to internal Brain injury. One kid died due to "hot dogging" on the freeway(popped a wheelie, looped it over then ranned over by a 18 wheeler truck). So you see...starting small isn't bad at all & ignore those make fun of you that u only have a Tiny bike. Remember it's your life not theirs whom your'e gonna lose if you make a mistake of choosing. Congratulations on deciding to be a motorcyclist! You will explore a lot of things, meet lots of people, Visiting new places & learning about everything about bikes is virtually endless (I'm still learning after 9 years!) Good Luck to you kid...stay safe, keep the rubber side down. And Understand This: if you ride, those who rode before you & those who will ride after you...Lives in your blood forever................... Source(s): "45 yrs. old,9 years of riding...4 States + Vancouver Canada as my Experience Belt...& I'm still Learning and having fun!" get a ninja 250. That was my first bike she treated me well. The engine was big enough that it kept up on the highway just fine. You can get one for about 2 grand. It isnt too big or heavy so you can get balance down really easy. It is nice for a first bike because if you wreck while learning then you didnt too much money into it. Also easy to work on if you want to get your hands dirty Ok for beginners never riding one before i would recommend the 250 ninja it has all the power and speed you want for now. it is very easy to handle. i wouldnt push it with the 500 or a 600 because there is a huge difference in how they handle and their performance. the 250 ninja likes to try to stand up on end too if you try to take off too fast also. hope my opinion helps. good luck My first bike was a 550 Kawasaki, and it was a great choice for a first ride. I could run full out on the interstate AND got great gas mileage too. It wasn't too big, and definitely not too small. AND I paid pennies on the dollar for insurance too. Get something midsized, you won't get bored, it's got plenty of power..and you'll have awesome riding range with the gas. 12 years and 200,000 plus miles on my 2 bikes. I agree with joel750 95%, a 600 IS very potent, I got/have a ninja zx6r for my first bike and the things a pure beast for a first time rider, and its a 1995. I cant imagine what a 07 model is like with about 20 extra horses, or for that matter what riding mine full out is like but I will say this much. If your smart about your riding, realize your not as good as you think and the bikes more dangerous than you think starting on a 600 isnt impossible but please belive its a big risk that if taken lightly will put you on your as* before you knew what happend. Just remeber to take it easy, regardless of what size bike you get but the bigger the bike the easier you take it. Alot of people say your skills will progress faster and further if you start off small, and I see your looking at doing so cause theres only one 600 on your list so that says you might be more intrested in the ride and not the macho factor. I already see that your looking to get your gear and your taking the safty course so thats a very good starting point. |
