Is it fair to a 16 yr. to help pay for his unnecessary hospital bills.?

Over the summer he took a chance jumping dirt hills with a bicycle and broke his collar bone.
Also before his collar bone was healed he shattered his wrist riding a moped without a helmet that required major surgery.

Health insurance only covers so much and is it fair to expect him to cover some of the cost?

I would say yes this person should pay as it is self inflicted. If you dont start now and teach our kids about being responsible what are they going to be like when they are older it wont hurt to make them pay a small amount but they need to go and take some classes on having fun the right way as kids will be kids and they will drive you nuts but what would life be without them.Teach them well and who knows maybe this dare devil will make a career out of doing stunts that will awww us all.Good Luck
I'd say no. There are reasons minors cannot contract to be responsible for pmt on anything. Parental duty says you be responsible for your child.
Parents should be responsible for their children's medical bills. But in this case, maybe they are trying to teach him the consequences of irresponsible behavior.
You ARE joking, right? Of course not. That is just part of being a parent---you HAVE to pay for your children's accidents/mistakes. Sure you can be upset that he did something SO irresponsible, but you have to pay the bills. No, it is not fair to ask him to pay anything. Now, when he becomes 18 and if he still lives at home and does this stupid stuff, then you can ask him to start paying. If he gets a job at 18, then yes....he should start paying rent and other bills. My mother did that to me, helped me to get the heck out of the house faster. If I have to pay, then I might as well move out!
Yeah, maybe next time he decides to do something Idiotic he'll think twice cuz he may end up really paying for it, it would be a good lesson thats for sure.
Hmm, he shattered his wrist riding a moped wihtout a helmet.. ( I wonder what protection does a helmet give to a wrist)

hmmmm
I would go ahead and pay these but let him know in the future if he decides to do stupid stuff then he will be responsible for the bills. I would also let him know that the reason he can't get any extra money or new stuff is b/c you had to pay DR. bills.
