Should a countries politicians tell their constituents what they can't do with thier own bodies? |
ie: drugs sex fatty foods wear a bike helmet I don't think so. If you're not hurting anyone else I think you should be able to be as free to be an idiot as you like! Not in my opinion. as long as you're not hurting others I don't htink they should. No, as long as you are not endangering anyone else. But we live in the US so our politicians want to waste their time on that stuff instead of dealing with the real problems in AMERICA!!! not the rest of the world. I guess if they did that they would have to actually WORK and do what is best for the American CITIZENS, regardless of how they benefit. Yes and no. There are areas such as prescription drugs and surgery (to name two examples) in which the average citizen does not have the necessary knowledge to do the most appropriate thing. Thus, the government tells us what to do. There is an axiom of governing that says "people will only obey those laws to which they agree". Thus Liquor is no longer prohibited, but is restricted. Is the 21 age limit obeyed? Yes and no. Marijuana is illegal. Yet many use it. So the majority of citizens do assume the right to tell people what they can put in their bodies and to some degree how they can alter their bodies. That is the way it is. Now to the hard questions like abortion, suicide, mutilation. It is the tradition in virtually every nation to apply the ethical standards of the majority religion to laws. A law against partial birth abortion was recently upheld by the US Supreme Court for example. People are prohibited from doing things to their bodies because 1. they are legally immature, (usually under 18 or 21), 2. they would violate some widely held legal/ethical principal, 3. the complexity of a decision to use a substance or affect the body is deemed to be something the government should decide. |
