What is the safest motor powered bike? |
obviously not motorcylces but is it a moped or motorscooter? What precautions can be taken to stay safe on them(other than a helmet)? And how much to prices range? would be better to just get a full sized bike. scooters might look safe, but the tires on these itty bitty 50cc scooters make abrupt manuvers like swerving downright tricky; if done the least bit wrong, the scoot will dump u. been there, seen it firsthand. little scooters dont have much of a lean angle either. they're strictly for the back roads. u wont get over 45 mph on 1 of these...u'll start to get wobble the closer u get to 'max speed', and it feels so shakey, u will think ur about to dump it. moped's are worthless. i consider them a traffic hazard. get a full sized bike instead. the extra rubber will be alot safer if u have to do an abrupt swerve...and the possibility is always there. now about safety on a 2 wheeler. never assume they will see u. consider the bike invisible. when cars are waiting to pull out on side streets, i do 2 things; 1: expect them to pull out at the last minute, and 2: i'm watching their front wheels. if they move, i get ready to do a panic stop. when at intersections and i'm the 1st one at the light: i keep the bike in gear and keep watch on the back. i'll flash the brake lights to give cagers notice i'm there. which reminds me....never just slam on the brakes if a car is followin. u will reduce speed almost 3 times quicker than a car will, and if that driver isnt on the beem, he will splatter u all over the road. always tap the brake lights a few times before starting to clamp down on them to stop. unlike a car, u will NEVER get away with doing a brake and swerve combo together. they have to be kept separate. its either brake first to slow down, release and then swerve, or swerve and then brake. 70% of total braking power for the bike is on the front, and if u are in a lean and hit that front brake, i guarentee u the bike will drop u instantly. panic stops can only be executed with the bike standing straight up. never in a lean. always ride with the high beams on in the day. i see other bikes at longer range than those with low beams. visibiliy we dont have much off, so anything u can do to increase that will keep u out of the ambulance. alot of cruiser bikes can be outfitted with a headlight modulator. this pulses the headlight between high and low beams, and i can spot a bike in very heavy traffic if he's running this at very long range. if u have to get a scooter, avoid the 50cc ones. they're junk. the honda silverwing or the suzuki berghman are the top of the line scooters, and have enough power to handle 2-up riding and can handle interstate speeds. both of these are roughly in the 600cc class. their bigger tires will give a much better ride. new 1's isnt cheap either. The driver determines how safe it is. If you are a beginner, the odds are against you. Better walk. |
