For reasons of my own nature i need to know some laws of biking in california? |
im 15 i need to ride down a highway in california on a bike...other than a helmet...is it legal? its down a mountain and about 25 miles but... Here you go: http://www.bicyclesource.com/body/safety... As far as I read it, you must stay off of Freeways, IE: Limited Access Highways. State and US Routes that are not freeways are up to your discretion. You have the right to the right hand lane the same as any motor vehicle, but don't tempt some "nut" in a car. Give the cars and trucks as much of the lane as you can. If there is a good berm to ride on do so. Lights and reflectors are required, as well as the helmet. A rear view handlebar end mirror is also a good safety accessory. I've got to say something good about this. I lived in L.A., but since have moved out of state. No matter. When I was there, I stayed in shape by biking. I would start early in the morning, and ride some incredible distances, and be home in the evening. I was in my teens still living at home. I had a great quality 10 speed, a Terrot, I believe French made. All the great qualities. I always observed all laws, as per to vehicles and bikes. Common sense and street sense were Job #1. I'd always be sure my single day trips were at least 70 miles, if not more. Return trips home were the toughest, because I'd go further, without thinking I'd only have time to rest, and head back. Now, I doubt I could copy those same rides. I'm still in pretty great shape, even though I'm, Ah Hmm, a bit older. CHECK YOUR RIDE! Tires, pressure, brakes, and hopefully a soft seat. You're only young once. Stay safe. But what ? It depends on what "highway" it is ! Are there any signs posted ? If you get caught by the CHP they will give you a ticket. A free ride off the freeway, and probably call your parents to come get you. Check out www.municode.com It's accurate in our area, probably is for yours, too. My understanding is that all interstate highways are offlimits to pedestrians and bicycles (and anything that can't maintain the minimum posted speed limit). Most everything else is open to bicycles and anything else, but it wouldn't hurt to check it out if you're in doubt. A call to local police departments is a good idea, too. You should call the local C H P office first. It is free and they will know the law. I am sure that you are not allowed on high ways with a bicycle. |
