I want to start cycling as a hobby...? |
I already have a fairly good cycling bike (Thin with thin wheels) and a helmet. Are there certain precautions or things to be aware of (Arthtitis, bone diseases, etc...). Is there a certain way to cycle (turning a lot, intensity, intervals, speed),,, GIVE ME TIPS!!!! BTW...I know how to bike! The best thing to do is to hook up with a club in your area. Go to www.usacycling.org and www.bikeleague.org, follow links for local clubs. they should be able to help you with broad based training advice to fit your personal situation. As far as health concerns, I would seriously recommend you go to a good bike shop and get fitted. They will adjust your handlebar height and reach, and to your seat so that you can ride comfortably. If your bike is not properly fitted, it may become uncomfortable very quickly and you could cause tendonitis or muscle strain that would not ordinarily happen to a healthy person. If you develop aches or pains that only occur on the bike, take it back to the shop and have them make adjustments. Once you start riding, if you develop any chronic pain you should stop and see your doctor. If says it's ok to continue riding, go back to the shop, explain the problem and they should be able to make adjsutments accordingly. Other than that, just ride as often as you can. Ride to school, work, the store, your friends houses..... Get plenty of rest - if you go for a long hard ride one day, take it easy the next. Eat a BALANCED diet. Don't start in on a performance diet until you think your ready to begin competeing. If you feel tired or sick, don't ride. A common novice mistake is thinking you're tired because you haven't been training enough. Rest is the only cure if you're tired. just rideeee man.. let it be just you, your bike and the nature! u'll be stress free. Start out slowly or risk shin splints. I have them right now (from a lot of cycling and a decent amount of running). They hurt like h3ll. So please, don't start out cold by biking 20 miles a day. nope you are very well eqquiped..so dont worry. just make sure your brakes are in tact... so that you can have a good control over your cycle. and wear knee gards. just ride with freedom.. let the road take you where it wants, cycling is such a great exercise and cool experience, good luck man Dude, I could never get enough info across on this board. My best suggestion is to find a cycling club (through your bike shop) and drill all the regular riders on the club rides. Some of these guys have been riding for 40 years, and have amassed some good ideas and tips in that time. Someone's gonna want to help! Sounds like you have a road bike. You might want to pick up some gear like road gloves, padded shorts, and a water bottle or camelback to start. Also, check your fit to make sure everything is ok (saddle height and foreward position, handlebar height, stem length). As everyone else said, don't do too much too fast. Also, read up on it.
