Are bicycle helmets required by law in NY state? |
For an adult As a state regulation, the answer is no ... if you are over the age of 16. Various municipalities may well have laws that DO require you to wear them ... mostly because of the higher volumes of traffic and the less "soft" shoulders available for bailing out. All that aside - I strongly recommend the use of a helmet ... at ALL times when on a bicycle. Idk, but please wear one. I run and cycle on the Mississippi River levee and a squandron of Lance Armstrongs plowed into one another last summer. Law or no law....who cares. Wear a helmet if you value your life. I hate to sound morbid, but it is true. Anyone that has wrecked on a bike can tell you, you almost always hit your head on the ground. If you feel silly wearing one, look around at all of the SMART cyclists, they are wearing them. Be smart.... I looked at the NY Law and it appears that there is no helmet law for bicyclists. Most states that have a helmet law only requires children up to 16 years of age wear a helmet. However, is it worth the risk to not protect your head. If you have a family, they rely on you to support them which requires your brain to do a job and your job relies on your brain for the corporate knowledge that it holds regardless of the job you do. According to that, bike helmets are mandatory for kids under 14 all across the state. Not mandatory for riders over 14 though. As the above poster mentions, there are additional rules from county to county that might make it mandatory for older riders to use them. Personally, I have witnessed way too many bicycle crashes all this time I have lived in New York. So I wear a bike helmet even if it's not mandatory by law. Hope this helps.
