Should you be required to wear mandatory bicycle helmets?

i need put this argruement and into a persuasive writing
thanx a lot ppl :P

No, if riders want to crack their head open- it's their own damn choice.
I think its up to the rider. it'd be smart for them but not mandatory. like for a mototrcycle you just need eye protection.
In California it's the law for kids under 18, though I do not see it being enforced where I live.

If it's mandatory, no doubt they should wear it.

After a rider is old enough to make their own decisions, then it should be optional. Because any danm fool who refuses to wear one when they're cheap and easy to get should be removed from the gene pool before they reproduce.

Though I'm 57 I wear one when I ride, both as a safety issue and as an example for my children. You only have to meet one brain-injured bicyclist to become a believer. I met one in 1976.

Riding a bicycle on a city street you are a soft unprotected blob of protoplasm surrounded by hurtling masses of metal weighing a ton or more. One second's inattention on the part of you or any of the drivers around you, a slippery patch, or a rock in the wrong place can ruin you whole life faster than you can stop it. Then if you don't die, those you love may need to take care of you at huge expense for the rest of your life.

So I wear it, for me, for my kids, and for my wife.
Google some statistics...bicycle safety statistics, deaths, cause of death.
You will find that the number one cause of death is head injury.
Google the cost to insurance and society for treatment of head injury due to bicycle injury. Not to mention long term care for permanent brain damage
You will find that the cost is very hi. Who pays that cost? Certainly not the kid with the injury....we all pay that cost through higher insurance costs, and tax dollars.
Google number of bicycle deaths that might have been prevented had helmets been worn...
What is a life worth? Can a child be brought back? What is the devastating human cost of, for example, losing a child?

On the other hand...
Argue that people are free and this is a free country. The risk a person takes is his own business. It is good to feel the wind in your hair. or whatever

A possible alternative; make helmet mandatory for minors who are not at age of consent to make that kind of decision I mentioned above.

Just a couple of ideas, good luck
Absolutely not. Wearing a bicycle helmet is a good idea, but in a so-called "free society", freedom to make only wise choices is no choice at all. It's not the government's responsibility to protect me from myself.
Yes!

I've been riding 2-wheelers since I was about 5 years old (maybe 4陆). I got my first bicycle for Christmas and it came with training wheels on it. I rode with training wheels on for 1 day - Christmas Day. On Boxing Day (the 26th), I was falling off the bike without any training wheels. I learned how to ride FAST.

That was back in the late 1970's. I have since put thousands of miles on several bicycles. I rode a bicycle about 10 miles each way to and from high school almost ever day. I have had a number of spills (cycling term for a crash), many before I started wearing a helmet.

My scars (including one on my face) and I say that wearing helmets should be mandatory. Ride smart, ride safe.
