Planning on training my horse this weekend...? |
and I left my helmet and tack at a stable where I take lessons. I was pondering several things about training my horse.. 1-is it okay to use a bicycle helmet in place of a riding helmet? 2-is it okay to start breaking a horse by riding bareback instead of with a saddle? 3-my horse's teeth haven't been floated and fixed yet..can i start him with a hackamore? i want to just break him now..not any certain discipline yet. he's still pretty young, but old enough to start breaking. he hasn't ever been ridden. Also, I don't have a round pen, and the field is HUGE! I do have a rectiangular shaped barn but it's mainly used as shelter and a run-in barn..it has kindof uneven footing I was wondering mabe where it would be best to train him? -how can I break him of the habit of always wanting to be around the horses he's always been around? I can't keep him away from them!! thanks! 1) no, you can't use a bike helment. 2) well it's good to use a saddle bacause they have been getting used to the weight of on their back. you can't train a horse in a weekend. you need to have a lot of weeks of work leading up to it. like bonding and spending time with the horse so it knows you before you saddle train it. 3) once again the horse should wear a bridle a lot before you get on him. he needs to know what the signals are. have a professional trainer help you train your horse. if something bad happends to him when you first start training him he will remember it forever. Source(s): horse trainer/owner Well in my opinion I would ask a perfesional horse trainer how and when to brake your horse because there is all kinds of things that you could do wrong and ruin your horse. I took my horse to a trainer so she was trained right and she rides great. First question how old is your horse, how big, how big are you. What experience do you have???? maybe considering what you do't have you might want to start by driving. Sack the horse out good brfore you start I am a trainer and have been for almost 1/2 a century i have broken in 3 horses it is not ok to wear a bike helmet if your horse kicked you in the head it would offer no protection a horse should be broken in using a saddle bare back breaking is dangerous if your horse has problems with its teeth i would get them checked first as when you break a horse in everything has to be right a hackamore puts a lot of pressure on the face and its not suitable for breaking in a horse you need to take your horse away from where he is kept to break him it has to be done right as he will want to be near his friends you need to find a sand school or maneage to break him No you cant use a bike helmet, I wouldnt start on bareback because it may hurt the horses back if he is still young. Some people dont like hackamores im not sure about them, instead just have someone lead the horse with you on him. A pasture isnt really very good for riding if the footing is bad. |
