How do you remove a link from a bike chain without the special tool?

There are no bike shops near me and I dont have a spare chain, just wondering if there's a way of doing it with piers or something similar? Just until i get the chance to buy a new one. Cheers

It can be done with primitive punch and hammer but if you have access to a Wal-mart or Dick's you would be better served they generally have cheap chain breaks that will save you what could be a bunch of time and hurt fingers. Most stores that sell bikes will have a break in the cheap accessory section next to spare tubes and horns.

If you ever want to use the chain for anything cycling related, there is no way to remove and reinstall it without a chain tool. Some people may tell you to grind the pin down, or use a punch and hammer to drive the pin out. Beleive me, it won't work.

If you don't have a nearby bike shop, go to a mail order bicycle place like Performance and buy a chain tool. Here is a link:

Or, purchase a multitool to carry with you that has a chain tool. I love the Crank Brothers Multi tool:

Hope this helps.

hammer

file or grind the end of the pin untill it will push thru roller

You can get it apart, but chances are you'll not be able to put it back together with out the tool. Get one!

Like the other fellow said, try Kmart, Target, walmart, Ace H/w, and in addition call the local bike club, maybe someone close by has one. You will need the tool to put the new chain on anyway.
