Is lying always a mortal sin?

Is lying that doesn't really affect anything only a venial sin?
I have a problem with my bike and I don't want my parents to know about it because they always get angry with me. I do a paper round, but before I did my paper round today, I went to the bike repair shop to get a quote. But I said to my mum, "I'm going to be a bit late because I am doing an extra paper round" when in fact I was going to the bike shop. Was this a serious mortal sin lie?

It is a mortal sin unless you are lying to people to convert them to your beliefs. In this case, you're not doing that, so it is a mortal sin. But don't worry, I don't think lying isn't as bad as being gay accodring to the bible, so you're still okay...

LOL... nothing is a sin. The word sin is an invention of religion and meant to put a spin of fear on what would otherwise be a simple falsehood.

No always. I would have lied to the Nazi's, the Stalinists, the Mauists and any other brutal regime if it would have saved lives.

There is no such thing as sin, mortal or venial.
That said, lies do damage. If it doesn't really hurt anything, it still effects you.
I wouldn't worry about your soul as much as your integrity.

No, of course not. If your mom asks you if her new dress makes her butt look fat, you'd better lie....

But if you tell a lie that causes somebody to get hurt or even to die, then yes -- that would be a major sin and a mortal sin.

We can and often do justify the lies we tell - but a lie is a lie - that's the reality. There's no grey area between truth & lies.

Um... no... how does that hurt anyone?? Honestly... a lil white lie is okay in my mind in the ways of morality... however if you need help with your bike at all I'd ask your parents... they'd be more understanding than you'd think...

As it has been answered, in God's eyes, sin is sin. There maybe higher degrees of judgment with some sins, murder,etc., but, a believer must repent. A lot of the post modern church's are not teaching repentance, but it is in the Bible repeatedly. Now if I lied to save people's lives, there maybe some kind of judgment, but God knows what that should or should not be. He is sovereign. He is omniscient(all knowing). Peace in our LORD.
