Titling a home built motorcycle? |
I purchased a 68 Harley Davidson sportster frame from a swap meet. The seller gave me a bill of sale but no title. There are no numbers on the frame. I went to a local Harley shop and bought an assembled motor for the build with a Bill of Origin on the motor. The motor is stamped with the numbers that are on the Bill of Origin. The shop informed me that they had gotten several cases for the sportster motors years ago and this was the last one they had available. Now I need to title the bike so I can start enjoying it. The 68 sportsters were titled from the motor numbers (so I have been told). How do I handle the task of getting the title from the BILL of Origin? take it to the Motor V dept . tell them you built it your self they will supply a vin number! It is able to be titled, just as home built airplanes or hot rod cars. Each state makes it's own rules, so a check with the DMV can get you the answer for your new ride. IT Should title right off the Bill from the harley shop State procedures may vary and title may say 1968 or 2008 as year of manufacture. The Engine numbers from the shop will probably be used as identifiers- the VIN numberless frame is valid for that year (had one). Illinois wanted receipts on engine, frame, front forks and wheels- rest was not critical. Inspection of engine and frame to see if straight and not stolen/altered numbers, then general inspection- lights, brakes, mufflers, fenders. Pictures taken, bills of sale /receipts copied, inspection form signed off by police/inspector then off to DMV for SOS title and plates- brass tag issued as VIN to be riveted on bike frame close to neck- date of bike would be year of application, equipment as year of application required- unless trying for antique registration then the 1929 Harley noted as such and not allowed out at night with stock lights. Michigan would have frame numbers stamped into frame/neck area with a couple special state seal marks bracketing them, VIN started MICH then numbers that broke down into date of issue and 3 digits sequence- but title usually on the Harleys was dated as engine year. BSA chopper in Iowa couple years back was VIN=engine number and bike is titled as 1964 base on engine. Equipment required was as 1964 required so didn't need front brake on springer. what state are you in- California known to be picky about clean burning engines, may not pass inspection if a bit smoky. Other states may say must have kill switch and headlight on running ignition switch, 85 decible mufflers to meet standards now |
