Dirtbike ?

how would i tell that i need to re-sleeve my cylinder. just hope the shop is not trying to rip me off saying i need to re-sleeve it can anyone tell what to look for my bike is apart. thank you. try to be detailed on describing

Measure the piston to cylinder wall clearance.
Check the shop manual for the service specifications.
With the piston in the cylinder, check the clearance between the piston skirt and the cylinder with a feeler gauge.
If it's not within the service specs, it's time to bore the cylinder.
If the cylinder has been bored previously and there are no piston sizes larger available, it's time to be re-sleeved.
If the cylinder has wear grooves as deep as the thickness of a fingernail, it's should be re-sleeved.

They are not trying to rip you off trust me they know what they are doing.

what guardrailjim said... if you think the shop is trying to rip you off, take the cylinder to another shop or to a reputable machine shop along with the old piston... they will have the proper micrometers to check the bore of the cylinder and the outside diameter of the piston. this will give you the tolerance slop of the fit of the piston, but you need a service manual to know if that slop is within specifications or out...

also as GRJ stated, there are probably 2 oversize bores for the cylinder with matching piston sets for the 2 oversizes... the manual will tell you what the bore should be for stock, 1 oversize and 2 oversize... from the machine shop measurement, you can determine whether it's been bored before and they can tell you if it can be bored again or whether you will have to re-sleeve it, and then bore it to stock bore after installation of new sleeve.

key point is you truly need a service manual to know what to do from here on. and if you have a service manual, you can take the steps to do most of the assembly and disassembly work yourself... that will save money to spend if needed on boring / resleeving cylinder.

don't re-sleeve unless its a very old bike. boring and re-plating the cylinder is the better option. in fact, I wouldn't trust a shop who would rather sleeve it than do it right.
