Where to go to get hiking tips, trail recommendations?

do i go to a bike shop? where should i go to ask for advise and maybe buy a trail book/map?

I didn't answer this question last night because I'm not quite sure whether you're looking for hiking trails or bike trails or mountain biking trails, or some combination of the above? I also have no idea where you live or your situation or interests.

Generally, here in California, I can find some hiking trail information online, especially for Regional, State and National Parks, usually with PDF trail maps and sometimes trail recommendations and trail guides. I know some sites and if I know a location I can search Google and often people will have written up descriptions of their hikes in that area.

But if I really want to learn about the best trails in an area I always buy one or many guide books, which usually come with trail maps, if not a topo map, and detailed trail descriptions. Wilderness Press is my favorite trail guide company.
