New bike buying help? |
I am looking to buy a new bike, and am not even sure where to begin. I have seen bikes at Target for $129 up to professional bikes at a speciality store for over $3,000. I am not trying to get in to professional or hardcore bike riding. I just want to get something I can ride around on for fun, mostly on blacktop, but occasionally some mild mountain biking. I don't know what size or brand bike to get. I am 6'2" and weigh about 240 lbs with an athletic build. I guess I would like something in the $500 range, but if you can tell me it is really worth it to spend more on a certain brand or model, I am not opposed. Are there certain stores you would suggest? Also, my girlfriend wants to ride with me. Does the same advice apply to women's bikes? Thanks in advance for any info! The best thing you can do is to visit your local bike shop. Box stores stores sell generic low value, low quality bikes. For a few dollars more (and a lot more smiles down the road) visit a bike shop and tell them what type of riding you plan on doing. The shop will fit you to the bike and help with some basic maint. tips. (something you won't get from a box store) At a box store a women's bike is a bike with pretty colors, a bike shop realizes that some women might be better off on a men's bike depending on her build.(torso & leg relationship) consider something called a hybrid, it's a cross between road and mtn bike go to a local bike shop - not traget, walmart etc. they will help explain the differences between models. Look to spend somewher between $350 and $500. That is enough that you are not buying complete junk, but not so expensive that if you decide you do not like cycling you can sell it on without loosing too much money. If you get really keen on cycling you can sell and buy something more expensive once you have a better idea of the type of riding you enjoy most. |
