What is the right size bike for a 6-year old? |
My son's birthday is coming up and we would like to buy him a new bike. Obviously, taking him to the store to see which bike fits him isn't an option, because it's going to be a present. He is 3'11" (47") tall. Thanks in advance! I would say to go to your local bike shop and ask a professional... make sure that you can return and exchange it for a different size just in case it doesn't fit for him... I'd go for a 1500cc Kawasaki ninja!!! I'd say the standard 20 inch bike. Since 6 year olds tend to grow fast, get her a bike that fits her at its smallest adjustment so it can grow with her for a while. However, do not buy a bicycle that she has to grow into. Here is how you can test any style of bike for your child's proper fit: 1) Sitting on the seat with hands on the handlebar, your child must be able to place the balls of both feet on the ground. 2) Straddling the center bar, your child should be able to stand with both feet flat on the ground with about a 1-inch clearance between the crotch and the bar. 3)When buying a bike with hand brakes for an older child, make sure that the child can comfortably grasp the brakes and apply sufficient pressure to stop the bike. But of course the best option would be to visit a bike store. The people working there will be able to help you a lot.It doesn't unnecessarily means you need to bring your kid with you.Just stroll into a bike store with your husband and consult with the people there.I'm sure they will be glad to give you some advise, tips and recommendations. Measure his legs as if you were measuring to get new dress pants and then when you go to the bike stores be sure there is plenty of leg space from the seat to the ground - remember he will be sitting, not standing, but you wanna be sure his feet make it to the ground to stop the bike/get on and off the bike. i race BMX id go with a 16" for him.. and lol?? most the time i ride a bike im standing.. Measure his inseam and then take it to walmart and make sure it is higher than the top tube, about two inches since he is still growing. I wouldn't go to a bike shop at this point in time. |
