I have an old bike, what the hell do i do with it??

Its a rather skanky, old bike. Would probably fit a teenager. Worse for wear as well what with sitting in my garden shed for the past 8 years.

Probably needs dumping. Thing is, where do i take it? Surely there must be a recycling service somewhere for old bikes. The bike is that tacky it has a FULL, solid steel frame, solid steel forks, solid steel pedals, solid steel handle bars. Hell, it even has solid steel tyres its that scabby. So surely it can be melted down into something?

Im worried about taking it to my local bike shop for three reasons:

1. The embarrassment of walking into the shop with said bike
2. The quite probable rejection from the store staff when i ask them to take the bike off me for recycling
3. (If 2. happens) The humiliating walk home sporting an embarrassing hunk of metal

What should i do? Do you know if bike shops offer any kind of recycling service? I live in a horrible hell hole called Milton Keynes if anyone knows of anything local.

Thanks

I don't know about Milton Keynes but check with the local charities and aid societies, see if they can give it to a deserving soul.

And don't just dump it - make sure it's in working order first. Score some karma points.
Put it outside your house with a for sale sign on it and you can guarantee it will find a new home without anyone knocking on your door. Problem solved.
Ebay the blighter. Has to be worth 20 quid....
