How can I learn to ride a bike?

I am 28 yrs old female and have never learned how to ride a bike. When I grew up my parents wouldn't allow me to have one fearing I would ride off somewhere. Now I am wanting to learn for many reasons and plus to me whenI see people ride one it looks fun and feel that I was robbed of that joy. I also want to do this for a fun way to help lose weight and also save on gas. What can I do to start learning and what kind of bike would be best for me to buy? I have seen some at a store that seem nice and are on sale one is a womans comfort bike and the other is a moutain bike. Do I need any protective gear when learning or riding a bike? Thanks

Have someone help you at first and wear a helmet.
you should know already
buy one first.. then zoom away.. u wont fall.. trust me ;-)
peddle, stear, break, stop.
practice is all it takes. once you get the hang of it, it becomes nothing, its just so easy. i learned when i was 5 years old, and ever since then it's been second nature. ;D
training wheels
Yes you should wear some gear. Just ask somebody to give you a hand at learning to ride. It is not easy to start but once you have the basics it is like driving a car. You won't even have to think about it, you just go.

It is best to start off with a heavy bike to help with your balance. Make sure that the seat is the right height.
Dutchies love bikes!
